In 2023, it’s hard to believe that a meme from over a decade ago still holds relevance in our digital landscape. But that’s exactly what happened with the “Wicked Witch of the West Melting” meme, which took the internet by storm in the early 2010s. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and explore the origins, impact, and eventual decline of this viral sensation.

Origins of the Meme

The “Wicked Witch of the West Melting” meme originated from the classic 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz. In the climactic scene, Dorothy throws a bucket of water on the Wicked Witch of the West, causing her to melt into a puddle. The image of the witch melting became an iconic moment in cinema history.

Fast forward to the early 2010s and the rise of social media platforms like Twitter and Tumblr. Users began to create memes using the melting witch image, often pairing it with humorous or ironic captions. The meme quickly spread across the internet, becoming a viral sensation.

Impact of the Meme

The “Wicked Witch of the West Melting” meme had a significant impact on internet culture. It became a shorthand for situations where something (or someone) was being defeated or falling apart. The meme was used in a variety of contexts, from political commentary to pop culture references.

Some even used the meme as a form of self-deprecating humor, likening their own failures or embarrassing moments to the witch’s demise. The image of the melting witch became so ubiquitous that it was often used without any caption at all, relying solely on its cultural significance to convey a message.

The Decline of the Meme

Like all memes, the “Wicked Witch of the West Melting” eventually began to decline in popularity. As the internet moved on to new trends and jokes, the meme became less relevant. However, it still holds a place in internet history as one of the most iconic memes of the early 2010s.

Despite its decline, the meme still has its fans and proponents. Some argue that it paved the way for other memes and helped to establish the language of internet humor. The Origins of the Wicked Witch Memes

The wicked witch memes started gaining traction in early 2023, shortly after a video showing a cosplayer dressed as the wicked witch went viral. The video showed the cosplayer, who had put a lot of effort into her costume, slipping and falling while trying to walk down a flight of stairs. It was a hilarious moment, and the internet quickly turned it into a meme.

Soon after, people started creating their own wicked witch memes, using stills from the original Wizard of Oz movie or creating their own content. The memes ranged from clever wordplay to photoshopped images of the wicked witch doing ridiculous things. Some were innocent and funny, while others were more risqué and controversial.
