In 2013, Belgian artist Stromae released a hit single called “Tous Le Mêmes,” which means “All the Same” in English. The song quickly became popular in Europe and later gained international attention. The lyrics are in French, which may make it difficult for non-French speakers to fully understand the meaning. In this article, we will provide a translation of “Tous Le Mêmes” and explore its significance.

The Lyrics and Translation

Before we dive into the translation, let’s take a look at the lyrics of “Tous Le Mêmes.”

Vous les hommes, êtes tous les mêmes
Macho mais cheap, bande de mauviettes infidèles
Si prévisibles, non je ne suis pas certaine
Que tu m’mérites, vous avez d’la chance qu’on vous aime
Dis-moi merci
Rendez-vous, rendez-vous, rendez-vous au prochain règlement
Rendez-vous, rendez-vous, rendez-vous sûrement aux prochaines règles

The first verse translates to:

You men, are all the same
Macho but cheap, a bunch of unfaithful wimps
So predictable, no, I’m not sure
That you deserve me, you’re lucky we love you
Say thank you
Appointment, appointment, appointment at the next settlement
Appointment, appointment, appointment definitely at the next rules

The Meaning of the Song

“Tous Le Mêmes” is a critique of gender roles and expectations in heterosexual relationships. Stromae addresses men in the song, calling them “macho but cheap” and “unfaithful wimps.” He sings about how predictable they are and questions whether they deserve the love and attention they receive from women. The chorus, “Rendez-vous au prochain règlement” (appointment at the next settlement), refers to the idea of meeting up again after a break-up or fight. The line “Rendez-vous sûrement aux prochaines règles” (appointment definitely at the next rules) is a double entendre, as “règles” can also mean menstrual cycles. This line suggests that the relationship is cyclical and doomed to repeat the same patterns.

The Reception of the Song

“Tous Le Mêmes” was a commercial success, reaching the top ten in several countries, including France, Belgium, and Switzerland. The music video, which features Stromae dressed as both a man and a woman, has over 200 million views on YouTube. The song’s message resonated with many listeners, particularly women who related to the criticism of gender roles and expectations.

Criticism and Controversy

Despite its popularity, “Tous Le Mêmes” also received some criticism. Some people accused Stromae of being sexist and perpetuating negative stereotypes about men. Others argued that the song was too simplistic and did not offer any solutions to the issues it raised. Stromae defended the song, saying that it was not meant to be taken literally and that he was simply trying to start a conversation about gender roles. He also pointed out that the song was autobiographical and based on his own experiences in relationships.

Conclusion

“Tous Le Mêmes” is a powerful song that addresses important issues related to gender and relationships. While it may be controversial, it has sparked important conversations and has helped to raise awareness about the ways in which gender roles can be harmful and limiting. Whether you speak French or not, “Tous Le Mêmes” is a song worth listening to and reflecting on.

The Lyrics

“Tous Les Memes” is a song that tells a story of a tumultuous relationship between two people. Stromae sings from two different perspectives – one being a man and the other a woman. The chorus is the most recognizable part of the song, with the repetitive line “Tous les mêmes, tous les mêmes, tous les mêmes” (“All the same, all the same, all the same”).

The first verse is sung from the man’s perspective, where he talks about how women always want what they can’t have, and how they always want to change the man they are with. He also talks about how women often use their tears to manipulate their partners.

The second verse is sung from the woman’s perspective, where she talks about how men are all the same, and how they never take responsibility for their actions. She also talks about how men often use their power to control women.

The third verse is sung from Stromae’s perspective, where he talks about how both men and women are guilty of perpetuating gender stereotypes and how they both need to take responsibility for their actions.

The Translation

Chorus:

All the same, all the same, all the same

Verse 1 (man’s perspective):

She always wants the same thing, she’s never satisfied

She wants what she can’t have, that’s the problem

She cries, she cries, she cries, she’ll do anything

She wants what she can’t have, that’s the problem

Verse 2 (woman’s perspective):

They’re all the same, they’re all the same, they’re all the same

They always want more, they never take responsibility

They cry, they cry, they cry, it’s always someone else’s fault

They’re all the same, they’re all the same, they’re all the same

Verse 3 (Stromae’s perspective):

We’re all the same, we’re all the same, we’re all the same
