What is Furniture Stripping?

Furniture stripping is the process of removing old paint, varnish, or other finishes from furniture. This is typically done to restore the piece to its natural beauty, to prepare it for a new finish or to repair any damage. Stripping can be a messy and time-consuming process, but the end result is usually worth the effort.

Tools and Materials You Will Need

Before you begin, you will need to gather the following tools and materials:

• Protective gloves and eyewear
• Chemical stripper
• Paint scraper or putty knife
• Wire brush or steel wool
• Sandpaper (80- to 120-grit)
• Clean rags
• Mineral spirits or denatured alcohol
• Wood conditioner
• Stain, paint or varnish (optional)

Step-by-Step Guide to Stripping Furniture

Now that you have all the tools and materials, here is a step-by-step guide to stripping furniture:

Step 1: Prep Your Workspace

Make sure you are working in a well-ventilated area. Lay down a drop cloth or old sheet to protect your work surface. Wear protective gloves and eyewear to protect yourself from the chemicals.

Step 2: Apply Chemical Stripper

Apply a generous amount of chemical stripper to the surface of the furniture. Use a brush or roller to spread it evenly over the entire piece. Follow the instructions on the stripper and let it sit for the recommended amount of time.

Step 3: Scrape Off Old Finish

After the stripper has had time to work, use a paint scraper or putty knife to scrape off the old finish. Work in the direction of the grain and be careful not to gouge the wood. Use a wire brush or steel wool to remove any remaining finish.

Step 4: Sand the Surface

Use sandpaper to smooth out the surface of the wood. Start with a coarse grit (80-grit) and work your way up to a finer grit (120-grit). This will help to remove any remaining finish and prepare the wood for a new finish.

Step 5: Clean the Surface

Use a clean rag and mineral spirits or denatured alcohol to clean off any leftover residue. This will help to ensure that the new finish adheres properly.

Step 6: Apply Wood Conditioner

Apply a wood conditioner to the surface of the wood. This will help to even out the absorption of any stain or paint you choose to apply.

Step 7: Apply New Finish (Optional)

If you want to change the color or finish of the wood, now is the time to do it. Apply a stain, paint or varnish to the surface of the wood following the manufacturer’s instructions.
