It’s been four years since the infamous Cody Parkey car meme took the internet by storm. For those who may not remember, Cody Parkey was a kicker for the Chicago Bears who missed a crucial field goal during a playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles in January 2019. The miss ultimately led to the Bears being eliminated from the playoffs, and Parkey became the target of much criticism and ridicule.

The Birth of the Meme

Shortly after the game ended, a video surfaced on social media of a person repeatedly kicking and hitting a car with the caption “Cody Parkey’s car after the game.” The video quickly went viral, and people began creating their own versions of the meme. Some used actual footage from the game, while others used edited images of Parkey’s face on different objects.

The meme became so popular that it even made its way onto national television. During an episode of “Saturday Night Live,” actor Matt Damon played Parkey in a sketch where he appeared on a talk show to discuss the incident. The sketch poked fun at Parkey and the meme, and even featured a cameo from the person who created the original video.

The Aftermath

The Cody Parkey car meme may have been entertaining for some, but it had real-world consequences for Parkey. He received countless death threats and was even booed by Bears fans during a preseason game the following year. He was eventually released by the team and struggled to find a new home in the NFL.

Despite the negative impact it had on Parkey’s life, the meme continued to thrive. In fact, it’s still being shared and referenced today, four years later. Some people even use it as a way to describe their own failures or shortcomings.

Responses and Comments

People who are familiar with the Cody Parkey car meme have varying opinions on its impact. Some find it hilarious and a great way to poke fun at a memorable moment in sports history. Others feel that it was taken too far and that the harassment Parkey received was uncalled for.

“I think the meme was funny and harmless,” says John, a Bears fan from Chicago. “But the death threats and booing were definitely not okay. At the end of the day, it was just a football game.”

On the other hand, Sarah, a sports journalist, believes that the meme was mean-spirited and unnecessary. “Cody Parkey already knew he made a mistake. He didn’t need thousands of people reminding him of it and making fun of him.”
