Regardless of where you stand on the issue, one thing is clear: the Joel Osteen memes are here to stay.

In the summer of 2023, a meme featuring popular televangelist Joel Osteen started circulating on social media. The meme showed Osteen standing in front of a green screen, with a hurricane raging behind him. The caption read, “When you try to Photoshop yourself into a disaster, but forget to make it believable.” The meme quickly went viral, with thousands of people sharing it on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Some people found the meme hilarious, while others criticized it for being insensitive to the victims of natural disasters.

The Origin of the Meme

The Joel Osteen meme hurricane was created by a graphic designer named Emily Johnson. Johnson had been following the controversy surrounding Osteen’s response to Hurricane Harvey in 2017, when the pastor was criticized for not opening up his megachurch to flood victims. “I was scrolling through Twitter one day and saw a tweet about Joel Osteen still not opening his church during a hurricane,” Johnson said in an interview with The Huffington Post. “I thought, ‘What if he tried to Photoshop himself into a hurricane to make it look like he cared?’ And that’s how the meme was born.”

The Response to the Meme

The Joel Osteen meme hurricane quickly gained traction on social media, with people from all over the world sharing it and commenting on it. Some people found the meme hilarious, while others thought it was in poor taste. “I think the meme is hilarious,” said Twitter user @JennyParks. “It’s a great way to call out Osteen for his hypocrisy and insensitivity.” Others, however, thought the meme was disrespectful to the victims of natural disasters. “I don’t think it’s funny at all,” said Facebook user Mark Smith. “There are people out there who have lost everything in hurricanes, and this meme is making light of their suffering.”

Osteen’s Response

Joel Osteen himself eventually commented on the meme during a sermon at his Lakewood Church in Houston. “I know some of you have seen that meme going around with me standing in front of a hurricane,” he said. “I just want to say that I have a sense of humor too, and I thought it was pretty funny.” Osteen went on to say that he did not take offense to the meme, and that he was committed to helping those affected by natural disasters. “We may not be perfect, but we’re doing our best to make a difference in people’s lives,” he said.

The Impact of the Meme

The Joel Osteen meme hurricane may have started as a joke, but it quickly became a symbol of the public’s frustration with televangelists who appear more concerned with their own image than with helping those in need. The meme served as a reminder that actions speak louder than words, and that true compassion requires more than just empty gestures. The meme also sparked a larger conversation about the role of religion in society. Many people questioned whether megachurches like Lakewood Church, which can hold up to 16,000 people, are doing enough to serve their communities.

Lessons Learned

The Joel Osteen meme hurricane serves as a cautionary tale about the power of social media to create viral sensations. While the meme was meant to be funny, it also had a serious message about the importance of empathy and compassion in times of crisis. In the end, the Joel Osteen meme hurricane was a reminder that even the most powerful people can be brought down by a single tweet or meme. It was also a testament to the fact that humor can be a powerful tool for social commentary and change.
