In 2018, former US President Donald Trump made a statement during a press conference that sparked the creation of one of the most popular memes in recent years. The statement in question was a simple slip of the tongue, but it quickly became the subject of countless jokes and parodies online. The phrase “would/wouldn’t” in Trump’s statement was misheard by many as “wouldn’t/would,” leading to a flood of memes that poked fun at the president’s verbal blunder.

The Birth of the Trump Misspoke Meme

The moment that gave birth to the Trump Misspoke Meme occurred on July 17, 2018, during a press conference held in Helsinki, Finland. The conference was held between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin and was meant to address the ongoing tensions between the two countries. During the press conference, a reporter asked Trump whether he believed Putin’s claim that Russia did not interfere in the 2016 US Presidential Election.

Trump’s response was, “My people came to me, Dan Coats came to me, and some others, they said they think it’s Russia. I have President Putin; he just said it’s not Russia. I will say this: I don’t see any reason why it would be.”

It was this last sentence that caused the confusion. Trump had intended to say, “I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t be,” but he misspoke and said, “I don’t see any reason why it would be.”

The Rise of the Trump Misspoke Meme

As soon as the press conference ended, social media was abuzz with reactions to Trump’s statement. Many people were quick to point out the mistake and poke fun at the president. The misheard phrase “wouldn’t/would” quickly became a viral meme, with countless parodies and remixes popping up online.

The Trump Misspoke Meme became so popular that it even caught the attention of late-night talk show hosts and news outlets. It was featured in segments on shows like The Daily Show and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and news outlets like CNN and The Washington Post wrote articles about the phenomenon.

Response from People Who Know It

Many people who were present at the press conference, including journalists and political analysts, have since spoken out about the Trump Misspoke Meme. Some have criticized the meme for being childish and distracting from the real issues at hand, while others have defended it as a form of political satire and a way to hold the president accountable for his words.

Regardless of where people stand on the issue, there is no denying the impact that the Trump Misspoke Meme had on popular culture. It was a shining example of how quickly and easily information can spread in the age of social media and how humor can be a powerful tool for political commentary.

The Legacy of the Trump Misspoke Meme

Today, in 2023, the Trump Misspoke Meme is still referenced and shared on social media. Though it may have lost some of its initial impact and popularity, it remains a part of internet culture and a symbol of the turbulent political climate of the late 2010s.

As we look back on the meme and the events that led to its creation, it is important to remember the power of humor and satire in political discourse. Whether we agree with the message of the meme or not, it serves as a reminder that we must always be vigilant in holding our leaders accountable and speaking truth to power.
