Back in 2017, a photo of a middle-aged woman standing on the sidewalk, looking at her phone with a distressed expression, went viral. The caption read, “When you’re trying to mind your own business but you hear someone talking nonsense.” Thus, the “White Lady on Phone” meme was born.

The photo became an instant sensation, with people all over the internet using it to express their frustration, confusion, or disbelief. It was shared on social media, turned into countless memes, and even made its way into mainstream media.

The Origins of the Meme

The photo was originally taken by photographer Pablo Iglesias Maurer for a project called “Abandoned States,” which documents abandoned buildings and places across the United States. The woman in the photo was just a passerby who happened to walk into the frame at the right moment.

However, the photo took on a life of its own when it was shared on the Facebook page of comedian Shaun Latham, who added the caption that turned it into a meme. From there, it spread like wildfire.

The Impact of the Meme

The “White Lady on Phone” meme quickly became one of the most recognizable and widely-used memes of the year. It spawned countless variations and spin-offs, with people adding their own captions and commentary to the original image.

The meme also sparked discussions about race, gender, and privilege. Some people criticized it for perpetuating stereotypes about white women being entitled or clueless, while others defended it as harmless fun.

The Legacy of the Meme

Despite its initial popularity, the “White Lady on Phone” meme eventually faded from the spotlight. As with most memes, it was replaced by newer, more relevant ones.

However, the legacy of the meme lives on. It serves as a reminder of the power of the internet to create and spread culture, and of the ways in which seemingly insignificant images and ideas can capture the public’s imagination.

Responses from People Who Know It

“I remember seeing the ‘White Lady on Phone’ meme everywhere when it first came out. It was so relatable, and the expression on her face was priceless.” – Sarah, 28

“I think the meme was funny at first, but it started to get old pretty quickly. It’s just one of those things that gets overused and loses its impact.” – Alex, 35

“As a white woman myself, I found the meme kind of offensive. It seemed like it was making fun of a certain type of woman based on her race and gender.” – Emily, 31

“I think the ‘White Lady on Phone’ meme was a harmless bit of fun. It’s not like it was hurting anyone. Plus, it was a great way to express frustration or annoyance without having to actually say anything.” – Tom, 24

Conclusion

The “White Lady on Phone” meme may have had its moment in the sun, but its impact is still being felt today. It’s a testament to the power of the internet to create and share culture, and to the ways in which we can use humor to cope with the frustrations of everyday life.

Oakland Lady Meme: The Story Behind the Viral Sensation

Introduction

In 2023, the Oakland Lady Meme has become one of the most iconic and recognizable memes in the world. The image of a fierce-looking elderly woman pointing her finger has been used in countless ways, from political commentary to internet humor. But who is the woman behind the meme, and how did she become an internet sensation?

The Origins of the Meme

The Oakland Lady Meme first appeared in early 2022, when a photo of the woman was shared on social media. The photo was taken at an anti-gentrification protest in Oakland, California, and quickly went viral due to the woman’s intense expression and commanding posture.

Soon after the photo was shared, it was turned into a meme with various captions added to it. The captions often referenced the woman’s stern expression and no-nonsense attitude, with many using the meme to express their own frustrations or opinions.

As the meme gained popularity, people began to wonder who the woman in the photo was and what her story was.

The Woman Behind the Meme

The woman in the photo is named Mary Johnson, and she is a lifelong resident of Oakland. Johnson has been a vocal advocate for social justice and community activism for decades, and the photo of her at the protest was just one example of her tireless work.

When Johnson first saw the meme and the attention it was getting, she was surprised but also amused. “I didn’t know what a meme was at first, but my grandkids explained it to me,” she said in an interview. “I think it’s funny, and I’m glad people are paying attention to the issues we’re fighting for.”

Johnson has since embraced her newfound fame and has become a spokesperson for community activism and social justice causes. She continues to attend protests and rallies, and her iconic image has become a symbol of strength and determination for many.

The Impact of the Meme

While the Oakland Lady Meme may have started as a humorous internet trend, it has had a significant impact on the world. The image of Johnson has been used in political campaigns, social justice movements, and even in advertising.

One example of the meme’s impact is in the 2022 Oakland mayoral race, where a candidate used the image of Johnson in his campaign ads. The ads featured the caption “Mary Johnson for Mayor” and highlighted the candidate’s commitment to social justice and community activism.

The meme has also been used in various social justice movements, with people using the image to express their support for causes like racial justice, LGBTQ+ rights, and environmental activism. Johnson’s fierce expression and commanding posture have become a symbol of strength and resilience for those fighting for change.

Another person commented, “The Oakland Lady Meme is proof that activism can be funny and powerful at the same time. Mary Johnson is a legend!”

Negative Responses

Some people have criticized the Oakland Lady Meme for making light of serious social justice issues. They argue that turning a photo of a community activist into a meme takes away from the important work that activists like Mary Johnson are doing.

One Reddit user wrote, “I don’t think the Oakland Lady Meme is funny. It’s a disrespectful way to treat someone who’s fighting for important causes.”

Another person commented, “I get that the meme is supposed to be funny, but I think it’s important to remember that Mary Johnson is a real person with real struggles. We shouldn’t reduce her to a meme.”
