In 2016, a video of a red-hot knife slicing through various objects began circulating on social media. The video, which was dubbed the “1000 degree knife challenge,” quickly went viral and spawned countless imitations and memes. The trend eventually died down, but not before leaving a lasting impact on internet culture.

What is the 1000 Degree Knife Challenge?

The 1000 degree knife challenge involves heating a knife to an extremely high temperature (usually using a blowtorch) and then using it to slice through various objects. The original viral video featured the knife slicing through a soda bottle, a shoe, and a bar of soap, among other things.

The video was popularized by YouTubers and social media influencers, who began creating their own versions of the challenge. Some even used the challenge to promote their own products, such as heat-resistant gloves or cutting boards.

Why Did the 1000 Degree Knife Challenge Go Viral?

The 1000 degree knife challenge was the perfect storm of internet trends. It combined the satisfying visuals of things being sliced and diced with the thrill of danger (since handling a red-hot knife can be dangerous). It also tapped into the current culture of “challenges,” which had previously included things like the ice bucket challenge and the cinnamon challenge.

Additionally, the challenge was easy to replicate, which made it accessible to everyone from amateur YouTubers to everyday people looking for a quick viral hit.

The Backlash Against the 1000 Degree Knife Challenge

As with many viral trends, the 1000 degree knife challenge eventually faced a backlash. Critics argued that the trend was dangerous and promoted irresponsible behavior. Some people even reported injuries from attempting the challenge themselves.

The challenge also faced criticism for being wasteful, as many of the objects being sliced were perfectly good items that were being destroyed for the sake of a viral video.

The Legacy of the 1000 Degree Knife Challenge

Despite the backlash, the 1000 degree knife challenge left a lasting impact on internet culture. The trend spawned countless imitations and memes, and even inspired other “hot knife” challenges such as the “100 layers of steel wool” challenge.

It also served as a reminder of the power of viral trends and the speed at which they can spread. The 1000 degree knife challenge was just one of many trends to take the internet by storm, but it will always be remembered as a unique moment in internet history.
