In 2002, Halle Berry made history as the first African-American woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in “Monster’s Ball.” However, it was a moment from her acceptance speech that would go on to become one of the most iconic memes of all time.

The Speech That Started It All

As Berry took the stage to accept her award, she began to cry and deliver a heartfelt speech. She thanked everyone who had helped her along the way and dedicated the award to “every nameless, faceless woman of color that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened.”

It was a powerful moment, but one line in particular would go on to become the subject of countless memes and parodies. Berry said, “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. This moment is so much bigger than me.”
