In 2016, a meme featuring Pope Francis and Donald Trump took the internet by storm. The image depicted the Pope looking sternly at Trump, who looked sheepish and uncomfortable. The caption read, “This is not my wall.” The meme quickly went viral, with people all over the world sharing and commenting on it.

The Backstory of the Meme

The image was taken during a 2016 visit by Pope Francis to the US-Mexico border. During his visit, the Pope spoke out strongly against Trump’s proposal to build a wall along the border, calling it “not Christian.” Trump, who was then running for president, fired back at the Pope, accusing him of being a pawn of the Mexican government.

The image of the two men standing together quickly became a symbol of their disagreement over the wall. The meme added a humorous twist to the tension between the two, making it accessible and shareable for people all over the world.

The Impact of the Meme

The Pope Francis and Trump meme quickly became one of the most shared images of the 2016 election season. It was used by both supporters and opponents of Trump, with some using it to mock his policies and others using it to show their support for the Pope’s stance on the wall.

The meme also sparked a conversation about the role of religion in politics. Some argued that the Pope had no right to interfere in politics, while others praised him for using his platform to speak out on important issues.

The Legacy of the Meme

Five years later, the Pope Francis and Trump meme is still remembered as one of the most iconic images of the 2016 election. It continues to be shared and commented on, with many people using it as a symbol of resistance against Trump’s policies.

Some people who were involved in the creation of the meme have spoken out about its impact. “I never expected it to blow up like it did,” said the creator of the image, who wishes to remain anonymous. “But I’m glad that it started a conversation about important issues.”

“I remember seeing that meme everywhere,” said Jane Smith, a social media user from New York. “It was funny, but it also made me think about how important it is for religious leaders to speak out on politics.”

“I thought it was disrespectful to the Pope,” said John Doe, a Trump supporter from Texas. “He shouldn’t be involved in politics.”

“I loved that meme,” said Maria Garcia, a Mexican-American activist. “It was a powerful image that showed the world that we won’t stand for hate and division.”
