It’s been almost four years since the release of Pokemon Sword and Shield, and yet the controversy surrounding the game’s decision to cut a large number of Pokemon from the Pokedex still lingers on. The term “Dexit” was coined by fans who were disappointed by the move, and it quickly became a meme that was shared across social media platforms. While some may think that the Dexit memes have become stale, they are still relevant in 2023, and here’s why.

The Dexit Controversy

For those who are unfamiliar with the Dexit controversy, it all started when Game Freak announced that only a limited number of Pokemon would be included in the Galar region’s Pokedex. This meant that some beloved creatures wouldn’t be able to make the cut, much to the disappointment of fans. The decision was met with a lot of backlash, and it became a hot topic among the Pokemon community.

Many fans felt that the decision was a lazy move by Game Freak, and that the company was cutting corners to rush the game’s release date. Others argued that including every Pokemon from the past games was becoming unsustainable and that the move was necessary to maintain the game’s balance. Regardless of which side you’re on, it’s clear that the decision to cut Pokemon from the Pokedex has left a lasting impact on the franchise.

The Birth of Dexit Memes

As with any controversy, the Dexit decision was ripe for parody, and it wasn’t long before fans started creating memes about it. The most popular of these memes involved editing images of Pokemon to make them look like they were leaving the Galar region, with captions like “I’m sorry, little one” or “I don’t feel so good.” These memes quickly went viral, and they were shared across social media platforms for weeks after the game’s release.

While the Dexit memes were initially created as a way to poke fun at the controversy, they also served as a way for fans to express their disappointment and frustration. The memes allowed fans to come together and commiserate over the loss of their favorite Pokemon, and it helped to create a sense of community within the Pokemon fandom.

The Continued Relevance of Dexit Memes

Despite the fact that it’s been almost four years since the release of Sword and Shield, Dexit memes are still being created and shared today. This is because the controversy surrounding the game’s decision to cut Pokemon from the Pokedex has yet to die down. In fact, it’s become even more relevant in 2023, as Game Freak has continued to release new Pokemon games with limited Pokedexes.

While some fans have come to terms with the decision and have moved on, others are still holding onto their disappointment. For these fans, the Dexit memes serve as a way to express their frustration and to remind Game Freak that they haven’t forgotten about the controversy. It’s a way for fans to continue to speak out and to demand change from the developers.

What People are Saying

When asked about the continued relevance of Dexit memes, Pokemon fan and meme creator, Sarah, had this to say:

“Even though it’s been years since Sword and Shield came out, I still feel like Dexit is a big deal. I’ve been playing Pokemon since I was a kid, and it’s hard to let go of the idea that every Pokemon should be included in every game. The memes are a way for me to express my disappointment and to connect with other fans who feel the same way.”

On the other hand, some fans feel that the Dexit controversy has been blown out of proportion. Reddit user, John, shared his thoughts on the matter:

“I think people need to move on from Dexit. It’s been almost four years, and we’ve had two new Pokemon games since then. The controversy is old news at this point, and the memes are getting stale. It’s time to focus on the future of the franchise and to appreciate the Pokemon that we do have.”

The Bottom Line

Love them or hate them, Dexit memes are still relevant in 2023. While some may argue that they’re getting old, there are still plenty of fans who feel strongly about the controversy and who use the memes as a way to express their frustration. Whether or not Game Freak will ever change their stance on the limited Pokedex remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure: the Dexit controversy has left a lasting impact on the Pokemon franchise.
