Back in the early 2010s, the “Too Damn High Guy” meme was all the rage on the internet. The meme featured Jimmy McMillan, a political activist and former candidate for governor of New York, who became famous for his signature slogan “The rent is too damn high!” and his flamboyant appearance, including a black gloves and moustache. However, like most internet memes, the “Too Damn High Guy” eventually lost its popularity and faded into obscurity. In this article, we will take a closer look at the history of the “Too Damn High Guy” meme, why it became popular, and why it eventually fell out of favor.

The Origins of the “Too Damn High Guy” Meme

The “Too Damn High Guy” meme first appeared in 2010 during McMillan’s campaign for governor of New York. McMillan ran on a platform of reducing the cost of living in New York, particularly the high cost of rent. His campaign gained national attention due to his unique appearance, including his black gloves and trademark moustache, and his catchy slogan “The rent is too damn high!”

After a video of McMillan’s performance at a New York gubernatorial debate went viral, the internet quickly turned him into a meme. People started creating their own images and videos featuring McMillan’s face and the “Too Damn High” catchphrase, and the meme quickly spread across social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit.

Why the “Too Damn High Guy” Meme Became Popular

There were several reasons why the “Too Damn High Guy” meme became popular. One of the main reasons was McMillan’s unique appearance and catchy slogan, which made him stand out from other political candidates. Additionally, the meme was relatable to many people who were struggling with the high cost of living in cities like New York. The meme also had a humorous and satirical tone, which made it appealing to internet users who were looking for a break from serious news and politics.

The Decline of the “Too Damn High Guy” Meme

Like most internet memes, the “Too Damn High Guy” eventually lost its popularity and faded into obscurity. There were several reasons for this decline. One reason was that McMillan’s campaign for governor was unsuccessful, which meant that there was no longer a political context for the meme. Additionally, the meme became overused and repetitive, which made it less funny and less appealing to internet users.

Another reason for the decline of the “Too Damn High Guy” meme was that it became associated with a certain political ideology. Some people saw McMillan as a radical or fringe candidate, and the meme became associated with left-wing politics or anti-establishment sentiments. This association made the meme less accessible to a wider audience, and it lost some of its appeal as a humorous and satirical commentary on the high cost of living.

Response from People who Know It

When asked about the “Too Damn High Guy” meme, some people who remember it fondly said that it was a funny and relatable commentary on the high cost of living in cities like New York. They said that McMillan’s unique appearance and catchy slogan made him a memorable and entertaining political candidate, and that the meme captured that spirit of humor and satire.

Others, however, said that the meme became overused and repetitive, and that it lost its appeal after McMillan’s campaign for governor ended. They said that the meme became associated with certain political views or ideologies, which made it less accessible to a wider audience.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the “Too Damn High Guy” meme was a popular and entertaining internet phenomenon that captured the spirit of humor and satire in the early 2010s. However, like most internet memes, it eventually lost its popularity and faded into obscurity. While some people still remember the meme fondly, others see it as a relic of a bygone era of internet culture.
