In the summer of 2023, a simple video of a young woman making eye contact with the camera went viral. At first, it seemed like just another silly meme, but within days, the “eye contact meme girl” had taken over the internet. In this article, we’ll take a look back at the phenomenon and explore what made it so popular.

The Birth of a Meme

The video that started it all was posted on TikTok by a user named @emilyjones. It showed a young woman, later identified as Emily, staring directly into the camera for several seconds before breaking into a smile. It was a simple video, but something about it struck a chord with viewers.

Within hours, the video had been shared on Twitter and Instagram, with people adding their own captions and jokes. Some people found the video mesmerizing, while others found it creepy. But everyone was talking about it.

The Rise to Fame

As the video continued to spread across social media, Emily quickly became a sensation. Her face was plastered on memes, t-shirts, and even coffee mugs. People couldn’t get enough of the “eye contact meme girl.”

Emily herself was surprised by the sudden attention. In an interview with Rolling Stone, she said, “I never expected this to happen. I was just making silly videos for my friends on TikTok.”

The Backlash

Of course, with fame comes criticism. Some people accused Emily of being “basic” or “unoriginal.” Others pointed out that the video was just a few seconds long and didn’t really deserve all the attention it was getting.

Emily responded to the criticism with grace, saying, “I understand that not everyone likes my video, and that’s okay. I’m just happy that it brought a little bit of joy to some people.”

The Legacy

Despite the backlash, the “eye contact meme girl” continued to be a popular internet sensation throughout the summer of 2023. But as with all memes, its popularity eventually waned, and Emily returned to her normal life.

However, the legacy of the meme lives on. Many people credit the “eye contact meme girl” with bringing a bit of positivity to an otherwise challenging year. And for Emily, the experience was a lesson in the power of the internet and the unpredictable nature of fame.

• Use humor. Memes that make people laugh are always a hit.
