It’s been almost a decade since the now-iconic “girl on shoulders at concert” meme first surfaced on the internet, but the image is still being shared and referenced to this day. So, what is it about this particular meme that resonates so strongly with people?

The Origin Story

For those who may not be familiar with the meme, it features a photo of a young woman perched on top of a man’s shoulders at a music festival. The woman is shown holding a beer in one hand and making a rock-and-roll gesture with the other. The photo was first posted to Reddit in 2012, and quickly went viral.

At the time, the image was seen as representative of the carefree, wild spirit of music festivals. It captured a moment of pure joy and abandon, and people couldn’t get enough. Soon, the girl on shoulders meme was everywhere, showing up on social media feeds, in music videos, and even in advertisements.

The Appeal

So, why has this meme endured for so long? Part of it may be that it represents a simpler time, when people were able to gather in large groups and enjoy live music without fear of a pandemic. But there’s more to it than that.

Many people see the girl on shoulders meme as a symbol of freedom and empowerment. The woman in the photo is taking up space, both figuratively and literally. She’s unapologetically enjoying herself, and she’s not afraid to be seen doing so. In a world where women are often told to be smaller, quieter, and less visible, the girl on shoulders meme offers a refreshing counterpoint.

Responses from Fans

Over the years, many people have shared their own stories of being the girl on shoulders at a concert. Some have even recreated the meme themselves, posing with friends or loved ones in the same pose. Here are a few comments from fans:

“I was that girl on shoulders at Bonnaroo in 2014. It was one of the best experiences of my life, and the fact that the photo lives on as a meme just makes it even better.”

“I love this meme because it’s a reminder that we all deserve to have moments of pure joy and abandon. We don’t have to be perfect or put together all the time.”

“The girl on shoulders meme is a reminder that we can all be bold and take up space, no matter who we are or what we look like. It’s a celebration of individuality and self-expression.”

The Legacy

As we move further away from the original posting of the girl on shoulders meme, it’s clear that it has become a cultural touchstone. It’s a shorthand for a particular kind of experience, one that’s all about community, music, and letting loose. And while the specifics of the meme may fade over time, its underlying message of freedom and empowerment will continue to resonate.

In the end, the girl on shoulders meme is more than just a silly internet trend. It’s a symbol of the human desire to connect, to express ourselves, and to find joy in the moment. And that’s something that will never go out of style.

The world of music has always been prone to the influence of trends, and the advent of social media has only served to amplify this further. In recent years, we’ve seen a new trend emerge in the form of the “rock concert meme”. These memes, which typically feature humorous or relatable images and captions related to attending a live rock concert, have taken the internet by storm and become a staple of music culture.

What are Rock Concert Memes?

Rock concert memes are a type of internet meme that typically feature images or videos of people attending live rock concerts, often with humorous captions or commentary overlaid on top. These memes have become increasingly popular over the past few years, with countless examples being shared across social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Some common themes in rock concert memes include poking fun at the behavior of concert-goers, commenting on the sound quality or performance of the band, or simply expressing the joy and excitement of attending a live show. Many of these memes are created by fans themselves, using photos or videos they’ve taken at concerts they’ve attended.

The Impact of Rock Concert Memes on Music Culture

While memes may seem like a lighthearted and frivolous aspect of internet culture, they can actually have a significant impact on the way we think about and consume music. In the case of rock concert memes, they have helped to create a sense of community and shared experience among music fans.

By sharing and engaging with these memes, fans are able to connect with each other and express their love for the music in a fun and creative way. This can help to build excitement around upcoming shows or new releases, and create a sense of anticipation within the fanbase.

Responses from the Music Industry

So what do musicians and industry professionals think about the rise of rock concert memes? The response has been largely positive, with many artists embracing the trend and even creating their own memes to share with fans.

Musician and comedian Bo Burnham recently posted a video on Instagram featuring a compilation of his favorite rock concert memes, with the caption “I love these so goddamn much”. Similarly, indie rock band The Front Bottoms have been known to share memes on their social media accounts, often featuring images of themselves or their fans at shows.

Other artists have taken the trend a step further, incorporating memes into their live shows or music videos. Canadian punk band PUP recently released a music video for their song “Kids”, which features a series of comedic vignettes set at a fictional rock festival. The video includes a number of references to popular rock concert memes, including a scene in which a group of fans hold up a sign reading “Don’t Stop Believing (In The Power of Love and Friendship)”.
