Since then, Big Bird has continued to be a popular meme subject. The character’s innocence and naivety make him the perfect canvas for humorous and often absurd memes. These memes often feature Big Bird in unusual situations or with unexpected captions. In 2018, the hit Netflix movie Bird Box took the world by storm. The post-apocalyptic thriller starring Sandra Bullock had viewers on the edge of their seats as they followed the characters on their dangerous journey. However, in 2019, a new trend emerged that was associated with the movie: the Bird Box sex meme. This meme quickly went viral, but not everyone was laughing. In fact, many people were outraged by it. Here’s what you need to know about the Bird Box sex meme and why it’s not okay.

What is the Bird Box sex meme?

The Bird Box sex meme involves blindfolding oneself or one’s partner during sexual activity, similar to the characters in the movie who must wear blindfolds to avoid seeing the monsters that drive people to suicide. The meme became popular on social media sites like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok, with thousands of people posting videos and pictures of themselves participating in the trend. While some people found the meme harmless and even funny, others were quick to point out the problems with it.

Why is the Bird Box sex meme problematic?

There are several reasons why the Bird Box sex meme is problematic. For one, it trivializes a serious mental health issue. Suicide is not a joke, and the movie’s depiction of characters being driven to take their own lives is a metaphor for depression and other mental illnesses. By turning this into a sexual meme, people are making light of a serious issue and potentially triggering those who have been affected by suicide.

Additionally, the meme is ableist. Blindfolding oneself during sex is ableist because it turns blindness into a fetish or a joke. Blind people do not have a choice about their blindness, and turning it into a sexual trend is disrespectful to them and their experiences.

What are people saying about the meme?

Many people have spoken out against the Bird Box sex meme, including mental health advocates and disability rights activists. They argue that the meme is harmful and offensive, and that it should not be normalized. Some people have shared their personal stories of how the meme has affected them, and others have called for social media platforms to ban content related to the trend.

One person on Twitter wrote, “The Bird Box sex meme is not funny. It’s offensive and disrespectful to anyone struggling with mental illness or disability. We need to stop making light of serious issues and start showing empathy and compassion for those who are suffering.”

What can we do to stop the trend?

If you see content related to the Bird Box sex meme, you can report it to the social media platform where it was posted. You can also speak out against the trend and educate others about why it’s problematic. By raising awareness and promoting empathy, we can work together to stop harmful trends like this one.

It’s important to remember that just because something is popular or “trendy” doesn’t mean it’s okay. We need to be mindful of the impact our actions have on others, and strive to create a more empathetic and inclusive society.

Conclusion

The Bird Box sex meme may have seemed harmless or even funny at first, but it’s important to recognize the harm it can cause. Trivializing mental health issues and turning disabilities into jokes is not okay, and we should all work together to promote empathy and understanding. Let’s make sure we’re not perpetuating harmful trends, and instead focus on creating a more compassionate world.
