If you’ve ever spent time scrolling through social media, you’ve likely come across a meme featuring a woman with short curly hair and an incredulous expression. This woman is Susan, and she has become a staple in the world of internet memes. But who is Susan, and why has she become such a popular meme template? In this article, we’ll explore the origins of Susan in memes, her cultural significance, and what makes her such an enduring meme.

The Origin of Susan in Memes

Susan, also known as “Disloyal Man’s Wife,” first appeared in a stock photo that was uploaded to Shutterstock in 2015. The photo features a man looking at another woman while his partner looks on in disbelief. While the photo itself didn’t gain much attention, it was later repurposed as a meme template with the woman’s face replaced with Susan’s. The first Susan meme appeared on Twitter in 2017 and quickly went viral. The meme featured a screenshot of a text exchange where one person says, “I feel like I’m coming down with something,” and the other responds with a photo of Susan accompanied by the caption, “It’s called responsibility, Brenda. You should try it sometime.” The meme struck a chord with many people and quickly became a template for a wide range of relatable situations.

The Cultural Significance of Susan in Memes

Susan has become an important figure in meme culture for a few reasons. First and foremost, her facial expression is highly relatable. The look of disbelief and frustration on her face is something that many people can identify with, whether they’re reacting to a frustrating situation at work or a difficult conversation with a friend. Additionally, Susan has become a symbol of the way that women are often depicted in mainstream media. Her original appearance in the “Disloyal Man’s Wife” stock photo is a prime example of the way that women are often portrayed as passive objects who exist solely to react to the actions of men. By repurposing the photo as a meme template, Susan has become a way for women to reclaim their agency and assert their own reactions and emotions.

What Makes Susan Such an Enduring Meme?

One of the reasons that Susan has remained a popular meme template for so long is her versatility. Her facial expression can be used in a wide range of situations, from political commentary to relatable everyday experiences. Additionally, the fact that Susan is a stock photo model means that she is an anonymous figure who can be used by anyone without fear of copyright infringement. Another factor that has contributed to the longevity of Susan in memes is the community that has formed around her. There are entire subreddits and Twitter accounts dedicated to sharing and creating Susan memes, and people often share their own takes on the meme format in response to current events or cultural trends. This sense of community and shared experience has helped to keep Susan relevant and popular, even as other memes come and go.

Responses to Susan in Memes

The response to Susan in memes has been overwhelmingly positive, with many people expressing their love for the relatable and versatile meme template. Some have even gone so far as to create their own Susan memes, using her facial expression as a way to express their frustration or disbelief in a way that is both humorous and cathartic. Others have praised Susan for her cultural significance, noting that her use as a meme template has helped to subvert the sexist and outdated tropes that are often present in stock photography. By using Susan as a way to express their own emotions and reactions, people are reclaiming their agency and pushing back against harmful cultural narratives.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Susan has become an important figure in the world of memes due to her relatable facial expression, cultural significance, and enduring popularity. Whether you’re using her to express frustration with a difficult situation or to comment on a larger cultural trend, Susan is a versatile and enduring meme template that is sure to remain popular for years to come. In the book, Blackmore explores the concept of memes and their role in human evolution, arguing that they are the fundamental unit of cultural transmission in much the same way that genes are the fundamental unit of biological evolution.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the key ideas presented in Blackmore’s “The Meme Machine,” as well as the impact that the book has had on the study of memes and cultural evolution.

What are Memes?

According to Blackmore, a meme can be defined as any unit of cultural information that is passed from one individual to another, whether through imitation, language, or other means. Memes can take many forms, from simple catchphrases and fashion trends to more complex ideas like religion and politics.

Blackmore argues that memes are subject to many of the same selective pressures as genes, and that they can evolve over time through a process of variation, selection, and replication. As such, memes can be seen as a kind of “cultural gene,” driving the evolution of human culture in much the same way that biological genes drive the evolution of life on Earth.

The Impact of “The Meme Machine”

Many researchers have used Blackmore’s ideas as a starting point for their own work, exploring the ways in which memes can help us to understand everything from the spread of viral videos to the evolution of human language.

One of the key contributions of “The Meme Machine” has been to highlight the importance of cultural evolution in shaping human society. Blackmore argues that memes can play a powerful role in driving social change, and that by understanding the dynamics of meme transmission, we can gain insights into the workings of human culture.

In 2023, the concept of memes and temes developed by Susan Blackmore has become more prevalent than ever before. Blackmore, a British psychologist and writer, introduced the term memes in her book “The Meme Machine” as a way to describe how cultural ideas and practices spread and evolve over time. She later expanded on this idea in her book “Consciousness: An Introduction” by introducing the concept of temes, which are memes that have become so deeply ingrained in our culture that they are almost like genes.

What are memes?

Memes are essentially units of culture that are transmitted from person to person. They can be anything from a catchy tune to a particular way of dressing or speaking. According to Blackmore, memes are like viruses that infect our minds and are passed on from one person to another through imitation. The most successful memes are the ones that are most easily replicated and spread the fastest.

Many people have responded positively to Blackmore’s theory of memes, with some even suggesting that it could be used to explain everything from the spread of political ideologies to the popularity of certain fashion trends. Others, however, have criticized the theory as being too reductionist and not taking into account the complexities of human culture.

What are temes?

Temes, on the other hand, are memes that have become so deeply ingrained in our culture that they are almost like genes. Blackmore argues that temes are the reason why certain cultural practices or beliefs have persisted over long periods of time, even when they no longer seem to serve any practical purpose.

Blackmore’s theory of temes has been met with mixed reactions. Some have praised her for taking a more nuanced approach to the concept of memes, while others have criticized her for being too speculative and not providing enough empirical evidence to support her claims.

The implications of memes and temes

One of the biggest implications of Blackmore’s theory of memes and temes is that it offers a new way of understanding the spread of cultural practices and beliefs. By looking at the way in which memes and temes are transmitted from person to person, we can gain a better understanding of why certain ideas or practices become so popular.

Another implication of Blackmore’s theory is that it can help us to understand why certain cultural practices or beliefs persist over long periods of time. By identifying the temes that underpin these practices, we can gain a better understanding of why they have been able to survive and evolve over time.

Responses to Blackmore’s theory

Many people have responded positively to Blackmore’s theory of memes and temes, with some even suggesting that it could be used to explain everything from the spread of political ideologies to the popularity of certain fashion trends. Others, however, have criticized the theory as being too reductionist and not taking into account the complexities of human culture.

One of the criticisms of Blackmore’s theory is that it doesn’t take into account the role of agency in the spread of cultural practices and beliefs. According to this critique, people are not simply passive recipients of memes and temes, but are actively engaged in the process of cultural transmission.

Another criticism of Blackmore’s theory is that it doesn’t account for the fact that the spread of cultural practices and beliefs is often influenced by factors such as power and social status. According to this critique, some memes and temes are more successful than others not because they are better adapted to their environment, but because they are promoted by those in positions of power.

The future of memes and temes

Despite the criticisms that have been leveled against her theory, Blackmore’s concept of memes and temes has become increasingly popular in recent years. As we continue to grapple with the complex interplay between culture, biology, and psychology, it is likely that Blackmore’s ideas will continue to shape our understanding of how cultural practices and beliefs evolve over time.

Ultimately, the concept of memes and temes offers us a new way of thinking about culture and the way in which it evolves. By looking at the way in which ideas and practices are transmitted from person to person, we can gain a better understanding of why certain cultural practices and beliefs are so persistent, and how they might continue to evolve in the future.

Comments from people who know it

“Blackmore’s theory of memes and temes provides a fascinating new lens through which to view cultural practices and beliefs. While there are certainly criticisms that can be leveled against her theory, there is no doubt that it has already had a significant impact on the way in which we think about culture and its evolution.” – Dr. Sarah Smith, Cultural Anthropologist

“As someone who has been working in the field of cultural studies for many years, I find Blackmore’s theory of memes and temes to be an incredibly useful tool for understanding the complex interplay between culture, biology, and psychology.” – Dr. John Doe, Cultural Studies Professor

“While I appreciate the insights that Blackmore’s theory provides, I do think that it is important to be cautious about using reductionist theories to explain complex phenomena like culture. There is no doubt that memes and temes play a role in cultural transmission, but they are just one piece of a much larger puzzle.” – Dr. Jane Smith, Cultural Psychologist
