Responses from People Who Know It
“As a former student athlete, I remember seeing the Student Athlete meme and feeling conflicted. On one hand, it was funny and relatable. On the other hand, it reinforced negative stereotypes about athletes and made it seem like we didn’t care about academics. Looking back on it now, I think it’s important to remember that student athletes are just like any other students. We work hard, we study hard, and we deserve to be taken seriously.” – Sarah, 26
“I think the Student Athlete meme was a fun way of poking fun at a common stereotype. As a non-athlete, I always thought it was funny to see athletes making fun of themselves. Of course, I also recognize that there are serious issues facing student athletes, such as the pressure to perform well both on the field and in the classroom. Overall, I think the meme helped to start important conversations about the experiences of student athletes.” – Michael, 31
“The Student Athlete meme was a harmful reinforcement of negative stereotypes about athletes. As a former athlete myself, I know how hard it is to balance academics and sports. The last thing we need is for people to think that we don’t take academics seriously. I’m glad that the meme has faded from popularity, but we still have a long way to go in terms of changing negative perceptions about student athletes.” – Marcus, 29
