The Origins of the Speed Racer Meme
The Speed Racer meme is based on a scene from the 1960s anime series of the same name. In the scene, the titular character, Speed, is seen driving his car, the Mach 5, at breakneck speeds. As he drives, a small bird flies alongside him, seemingly keeping pace with the car.
The meme itself takes this scene and adds humorous captions, typically referencing the bird’s ability to keep up with Speed’s insane driving. The captions often use the phrase “me trying to keep up with [insert task here]” to humorous effect.
The Memes Go Viral
The Speed Racer meme first began to gain traction in the early 2010s, when it was shared on platforms like Tumblr and Reddit. From there, it quickly spread to other social media platforms, becoming a viral sensation.
One reason for the meme’s popularity is its versatility. The “me trying to keep up” format can be applied to a wide range of scenarios, from work-related tasks to personal goals. This has made it a popular meme among people from all walks of life.
Why the Meme Endures
Despite being around for over a decade, the Speed Racer meme shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, it’s only become more popular in recent years. So why is it still trending in 2023?
One reason is its simplicity. The meme’s format is easy to understand and replicate, making it accessible to people with varying levels of meme-making experience. Additionally, the meme’s humor is timeless, relying on relatable situations rather than pop culture references that may age poorly.
