In 2023, the 3.5 Roentgen meme is still going strong. Despite being based on a reference to a nuclear disaster that happened over 35 years ago, the joke has managed to capture the attention and imagination of the internet. But how did it all start? And why has it become such a beloved meme?

The Origins of the 3.5 Roentgen Meme

The 3.5 Roentgen meme has its roots in the HBO miniseries “Chernobyl,” which premiered in 2019. The show dramatized the events leading up to and following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, which occurred in the Soviet Union in 1986. In the show, a key moment comes when a Soviet official asks how much radiation the plant workers have been exposed to. The answer is “3.6 Roentgen,” which is quickly corrected to “3.5 Roentgen” by the plant director, who ominously notes that “that’s as high as the meters go.”

The scene quickly became a meme, with people using it to joke about everything from overcooked food to bad weather. The punchline was always the same: “3.6 Roentgen? Not great, not terrible.”

The Appeal of the 3.5 Roentgen Meme

So why has the 3.5 Roentgen meme endured for so long? One reason is its versatility. The joke can be applied to almost any situation where something is less than ideal. It’s also a way for people to express their frustration or disappointment in a lighthearted way.

Another reason for the meme’s popularity is its connection to “Chernobyl.” The series was a critical and commercial success, and the 3.5 Roentgen scene was one of its most memorable moments. By referencing the show, people can connect with others who share their love for it.

Responses to the 3.5 Roentgen Meme

Not everyone is a fan of the 3.5 Roentgen meme, however. Some people feel that it’s disrespectful to make light of a real-life tragedy that killed thousands of people. They argue that the meme trivializes the suffering and loss that resulted from the Chernobyl disaster.

Others have criticized the meme for perpetuating a stereotype of Russians as being careless or reckless. They point out that the disaster was the result of a complex set of factors, and that blaming it solely on Soviet incompetence is unfair.

Despite these criticisms, the 3.5 Roentgen meme shows no signs of slowing down. It continues to be a popular way for people to express their frustrations and connect with others who share their sense of humor.
