It’s been three years since the infamous meme “Cruzeiro Rebaixado” took over Brazilian social media. The meme, which pokes fun at the football team Cruzeiro Esporte Clube’s relegation to a lower division, spread like wildfire across the internet and became a cultural phenomenon. However, as time passed, the joke lost its momentum and faded into obscurity. In this article, we’ll take a deep dive into the history of the meme, its impact on Brazilian internet culture, and what happened to it.

What is “Cruzeiro Rebaixado”?

Cruzeiro Esporte Clube, or simply Cruzeiro, is a well-known Brazilian football team from Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. In 2019, the club suffered a disastrous season and was relegated to the second division of the Brazilian championship. The club’s downfall, combined with the passion and rivalry of Brazilian football fans, led to the creation of a meme that mocked Cruzeiro’s situation.

The meme features a photoshopped image of Cruzeiro’s team bus with a “rebaixado” (relegated) sign on it. The image spread quickly on social media, with people adding their own captions and variations. The joke was so popular that it even made its way into the stands, with opposing fans bringing “rebaixado” signs to taunt Cruzeiro supporters.

The Impact of the Meme

The “Cruzeiro Rebaixado” meme had a massive impact on Brazilian internet culture. It was shared by millions of people across social media platforms, and even made its way into mainstream media. The meme was so pervasive that it became a part of the Brazilian lexicon, with people using “rebaixado” as a derogatory term for anything that failed or underperformed.

However, the meme also had a negative impact on Cruzeiro and its fans. The club was humiliated by the relegation and the subsequent meme, with many fans feeling ashamed and embarrassed. The meme also made it difficult for the club to attract new sponsors and players, as the negative publicity made it seem like a toxic environment.

The Decline of the Meme

As with all memes, “Cruzeiro Rebaixado” eventually lost its appeal and faded into obscurity. The joke became overused and repetitive, and people moved on to new memes and trends. However, the impact of the meme on Brazilian internet culture remains, and it will be remembered as one of the most popular and controversial memes in Brazilian history.

Responses from People Who Know It

Thiago Neves, former Cruzeiro player:

“The meme was funny at first, but it quickly became annoying and hurtful. We were already suffering from the relegation, and the meme just added insult to injury. I’m glad it’s over.”

João Pedro, Brazilian football fan:

“I loved the meme! It was hilarious and made me laugh every time I saw it. I even made my own version and shared it with my friends. It’s a shame that it’s not popular anymore.”

Ana Paula, social media influencer:

“The meme was a cultural phenomenon, and it’s a testament to the power of social media. However, I think it’s important to remember that memes can have real-world consequences, and we should be mindful of the impact they have on people and organizations.”

Conclusion

The “Cruzeiro Rebaixado” meme was a cultural sensation that took over Brazilian social media in 2019. It was funny, controversial, and had a massive impact on Brazilian internet culture. However, as with all memes, it eventually lost its appeal and faded away. While the meme may be gone, its impact on Brazilian internet culture remains, and it will be remembered as a defining moment in Brazilian meme history.
