The Early Days of Memes and Songs
Memes have been around for a long time, but it wasn’t until the early 2010s that they really started to take off. During this time, social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter were becoming more popular, and people started to use them to share funny images and videos. One of the earliest examples of a meme featuring a popular song was the “Harlem Shake” meme in 2013, which featured people dancing to a song by the same name.
Other early memes that featured popular songs included the “Gangnam Style” meme, which featured people dancing to the song by Psy, and the “Call Me Maybe” meme, which featured people lip-syncing to the song by Carly Rae Jepsen. These memes were popular because they were easy to replicate and were often hilarious.
The Rise of TikTok
In 2016, a new app called TikTok was launched in China, and it quickly became a sensation around the world. TikTok allows users to create short videos set to music, and it has become one of the most popular apps on the planet. One of the reasons for TikTok’s success is its use of popular songs in videos.
Many of the most popular memes on TikTok feature songs that have been used in other memes or viral videos. For example, the “Renegade” dance meme, which became popular in early 2020, features a song by K Camp that was originally used in a viral video on Instagram. The “Savage” dance meme, which also became popular in 2020, features a song by Megan Thee Stallion that was already a hit before it became a meme.
The Cultural Impact of Memes and Songs
One of the most interesting things about memes and songs is their ability to cross cultural boundaries. Many popular memes and songs have originated in one country or culture but have become popular around the world. For example, the “Gangnam Style” meme originated in South Korea but became a global phenomenon, with people all over the world making their own versions of the dance.
The cultural impact of memes and songs can also be seen in the way they influence popular culture. Many popular songs that have been used in memes have gone on to become hits in their own right. For example, “Call Me Maybe” became a worldwide hit after it was used in a meme, and the same thing happened to “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X.
The Future of Memes and Songs
As technology continues to evolve and new platforms emerge, it’s clear that memes and songs will continue to be a part of online culture. In the future, we may see new types of memes and songs emerge that are even more popular and pervasive than the ones we have today.
However, it’s important to remember that memes and songs are not just a passing fad. They are an important part of our culture and have the ability to bring people together and create moments of shared humor and joy.
