Pretty Little Liars (PLL) was one of the most popular teen dramas of the 2010s, and it still has a dedicated fanbase today. The show followed a group of high school girls as they navigated mysterious threats from an unknown enemy, all while dealing with their own personal drama and secrets.

The Birth of PLL Memes
PLL premiered in 2010, just as social media platforms like Twitter and Tumblr were beginning to gain popularity. Fans of the show quickly took to these platforms to share their thoughts and reactions to each episode, often using screenshots and GIFs to illustrate their points.
As the show progressed, fans began to notice some of its more ridiculous plotlines and inconsistencies, and they started creating memes to poke fun at them. For example, one of the most popular memes from the early seasons of PLL was the “Aria is always wearing a weird outfit” meme, which highlighted the character’s often bizarre fashion choices.
The Best PLL Memes
The Aria Meme
As mentioned earlier, the “Aria is always wearing a weird outfit” meme was one of the most popular memes from the early seasons of PLL. Fans would take screenshots of Aria’s most questionable fashion choices and pair them with funny captions, such as “When you have a job interview at Hot Topic at 4 but have to solve a murder at 5.”
Many fans also pointed out that Aria seemed to have an endless supply of strange hats and accessories, leading to even more hilarious memes.
The Ezra Meme
Ezra Fitz, one of the show’s main love interests, was often the subject of memes as well. Fans would poke fun at his overly dramatic speeches and questionable decision-making skills, often using screenshots of him looking brooding and intense.
One of the most popular Ezra memes was the “Ezra’s secret lair” meme, which mocked the fact that he had been secretly watching and manipulating the girls for years. Fans would create memes imagining what his secret lair might look like, often referencing other pop culture villains like Dr. Evil from Austin Powers.
The Mona Meme
Mona Vanderwaal, one of the show’s most complex and intriguing characters, also inspired plenty of memes. Fans would often reference her iconic lines and facial expressions, such as “You know what they say about hope. It breeds eternal misery.”
Other popular Mona memes included the “Mona is always one step ahead” meme, which referenced her tendency to be one of the few characters who actually seemed to understand what was going on.
The Legacy of PLL Memes
PLL may have ended in 2017, but its memes live on. Fans still create and share new memes on social media, and old favorites continue to be shared and enjoyed.
But why did PLL memes become so popular in the first place? According to some fans, the show’s mix of drama, mystery, and unintentional humor made it the perfect target for memes.
“PLL was just so over-the-top at times that it was almost impossible not to laugh,” says longtime fan Rachel. “The memes just added another layer of enjoyment to the show.”
Others point out that the show’s massive and dedicated fanbase played a big role in the success of its memes. “PLL was one of those shows that you just had to talk about with other people,” says fan Sarah. “And memes were a great way to do that.”
