The Origins of Memes
Before we dive into the world of personagens memes, it’s important to understand where memes come from. The term “meme” was first coined by Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book, “The Selfish Gene.” Dawkins defined memes as cultural units that are transmitted from one person to another through imitation.
In the early days of the internet, memes were simple images or videos that were shared across message boards and email chains. Over time, however, memes evolved into more complex forms, such as image macros and reaction gifs. Today, memes are everywhere on the web, and they have given rise to a whole new category of internet celebrities: personagens memes.
The Most Popular Personagens Memes
There are countless personagens memes out there, but some have risen to the top of the pack. Here are a few of the most popular:
Pepe the Frog
Pepe the Frog is one of the most recognizable personagens memes on the web. Originally created by artist Matt Furie, Pepe started out as a character in a comic book called “Boy’s Club.” However, in the early 2010s, Pepe became associated with the alt-right movement, and his image was co-opted by white supremacists. Despite this, Pepe remains a beloved character among many internet users.
Doge
Doge is a shiba inu dog that became an internet sensation in 2013. His image is often accompanied by broken English phrases, such as “such wow” and “very excite.” Although Doge’s popularity has waned in recent years, he remains a beloved character among many internet users.
Grumpy Cat
Grumpy Cat, whose real name was Tardar Sauce, was a cat with a permanently grumpy expression. Her image became a viral sensation in 2012, and she went on to become one of the most beloved personagens memes of all time. Sadly, Grumpy Cat passed away in 2019, but her legacy lives on.
The Impact of Personagens Memes
Personagens memes have had a profound impact on internet culture. They have given rise to a whole new category of internet celebrity, and they have even influenced the world of politics. For example, Pepe the Frog’s association with the alt-right movement had real-world consequences, as the character was added to the Anti-Defamation League’s list of hate symbols.
However, personagens memes have also brought joy and laughter to millions of people around the world. They have created a sense of community among internet users, and they have given us a shared language that transcends borders and cultures.
