It’s hard to believe that a simple cartoon frog could become one of the most recognizable memes on the internet, but that’s exactly what happened with Pepe the Frog. First created in 2005 by artist Matt Furie, Pepe started out as a chill and laid-back character that gained popularity on the message board website 4chan. But over time, Pepe’s image was co-opted by various online groups and became a symbol for everything from white nationalism to harmless internet humor.

Pepe Goes Mainstream
While Pepe had been a popular meme among certain corners of the internet for years, it wasn’t until 2015 that he really broke through to the mainstream. That year, Pepe was adopted by supporters of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, who used his image in various memes and online discussions to show their support for the candidate.
But Pepe’s newfound popularity brought with it some unwanted attention. In 2016, the Anti-Defamation League added Pepe to its list of hate symbols, citing his use by white supremacists and other extremist groups. Furie himself has condemned the use of Pepe in these contexts and has tried to reclaim the character’s original meaning.
From Meme to Market
Despite the controversies surrounding Pepe, there’s no denying that he has become a cultural icon in his own right. His image has been used on everything from clothing to phone cases, and he even has his own mobile game, “Pepe Scream.”
But the commercialization of Pepe has also led to some backlash from his original fans. Many argue that the corporate use of Pepe dilutes the character’s original meaning and turns him into just another marketing gimmick.
The Future of Pepe
So what does the future hold for Pepe the Frog? While his popularity may wax and wane over time, it seems unlikely that he will ever completely disappear from the internet. His image has become ingrained in the collective consciousness of online culture, and as long as there are people creating and sharing memes, Pepe will likely continue to be a part of that world.
But whether Pepe will ever be able to shake off his association with hate groups and become a truly harmless meme again remains to be seen. For now, he remains a symbol of the power and influence of internet culture, for better or for worse.
