It’s been almost two decades since Oprah Winfrey famously gave away cars to her entire audience during one of her shows. The moment has been immortalized in a meme that has taken over the internet, and it’s still as relevant today as it was back then. So, what’s the story behind the meme and why does it continue to capture our attention?

The Origin Story

In 2004, Oprah Winfrey hosted a season premiere episode of her daytime talk show, “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” that would go down in history. The episode was called “Oprah’s Favorite Things,” and it was an annual tradition where Oprah would give away a bunch of her favorite products to her audience. However, the 2004 episode would be different.

At the end of the show, Oprah announced that every member of the audience would receive a brand new Pontiac G6. The audience went wild, jumping up and down and screaming in disbelief. Oprah famously exclaimed, “You get a car! You get a car! You get a car! Everybody gets a car!”

The moment was a viral sensation before the term “viral” even existed. It was all anyone could talk about, and it cemented Oprah’s reputation as a generous and giving person. The episode has since been parodied and referenced countless times, and the “you get a car” meme was born.

The Meme

The “you get a car” meme has taken many forms over the years. It’s been used as a reaction gif, a Twitter hashtag, a Facebook post, and more. The meme is typically used to express shock or disbelief at a surprise or unexpected event.

For example, if someone were to receive an unexpected promotion at work, a friend might comment, “You get a car!” as a way of expressing excitement and disbelief. The meme has also been used to make fun of situations where someone is promised something great, but it turns out to be underwhelming.

The Legacy

The “you get a car” meme has become a cultural touchstone that transcends generations. Even people who weren’t around in 2004 and haven’t seen the original episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” are familiar with the meme. It’s a testament to the power of Oprah’s generosity and the way that a simple phrase can take on a life of its own.

The meme has also had a positive impact on the internet. In a world where negativity and cynicism can run rampant, the “you get a car” meme is a reminder that good things can happen and that we should celebrate them when they do.
