The internet has changed the way we communicate, consume media, and share information. One of the most fascinating aspects of internet culture is the rise of memes – images, videos, or pieces of text that are shared widely and often humorously across social media platforms.

In 2023, Newcastle is set to become the latest city to embrace meme culture with the opening of Meme World Newcastle. This new hub for internet culture promises to be a space where people can come together to celebrate and create memes, as well as learn about the history and impact of this global phenomenon.

The History of Memes

Memes have been around for much longer than the internet. The concept of a meme was first coined by Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book, The Selfish Gene. Dawkins used the term to describe how cultural ideas and practices could spread and evolve like genes.

However, it wasn’t until the rise of social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram that memes truly took off. Today, memes are a ubiquitous part of internet culture, with people sharing and remixing them across the world.
