The Origins of Metal Gear Memes
Metal Gear memes have been around for as long as the game itself. From the iconic cardboard box to the infamous “!” sound effect, fans have been creating jokes and parodies based on the game’s various elements for decades. But it wasn’t until the rise of the internet and social media that Metal Gear memes really took off. One of the earliest and most popular Metal Gear memes is the “Snake Eater” ladder climb. In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, there is a scene where the protagonist, Snake, climbs a seemingly endless ladder while the game’s theme song plays in the background. The scene is long and somewhat tedious, so fans began creating parodies and remixes of the song, and the ladder climb became a meme in its own right.
The Most Popular Metal Gear Memes on TV Tropes
TV Tropes has a dedicated section for Metal Gear Solid memes, and some of the most popular ones include:
The Cardboard Box
The cardboard box is one of the most iconic elements of the Metal Gear Solid franchise. It’s a tool that Snake can use to hide from enemies, and it has become a symbol of the game’s stealth mechanics. Fans have created countless jokes and parodies based on the cardboard box, including a popular meme that shows Snake hiding in a box with various captions.
The “!” Sound Effect
Whenever an enemy spots Snake, a loud “!” sound effect plays. This sound effect has become synonymous with Metal Gear Solid, and fans have created numerous jokes and parodies based on it. One popular meme features the “!” sound effect combined with a clip from the anime Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, resulting in a hilarious and unexpected combination.
The Codec Conversations
In Metal Gear Solid, Snake communicates with his support team via a device called the Codec. These conversations are often lengthy and filled with exposition, so fans have created parodies and remixes that poke fun at their length and complexity. One popular meme features a fake Codec conversation between Snake and the game’s villain, Liquid Snake, in which Liquid complains about his complicated plan being ruined by Snake’s interference.
What Fans Have to Say
Metal Gear Solid fans have mixed opinions about the game’s memes. Some feel that they detract from the serious tone of the game, while others appreciate the humor and lightheartedness that they bring. Here are some responses from fans: “I love the Metal Gear memes on TV Tropes. They’re funny and remind me of all the times I spent playing the game.” “I think some of the memes are overdone, but overall they add to the fun of the game.
