The Rise of A-Memes
The trend of memes on letter A can be traced back to the early 2010s when the “Advice Animals” meme format gained popularity. One of the most popular characters in this format was “Bad Luck Brian,” a photo of a nerdy-looking teenager with braces and a vest. The caption would always start with “Tries to…” but end with a humorous twist that would result in bad luck for Brian. One of the most popular versions of this meme featured the letter A, with the caption reading “Tries to alphabetize books / Starts with A.”
Since then, memes featuring the letter A have proliferated on various social media platforms. One of the most popular examples is the “Ancient Aliens” meme, which features a photo of Giorgio A. Tsoukalos, a Swiss author, and television personality, with the caption “I’m not saying it was aliens, but it was aliens.” The letter A is often used as a clever way to emphasize the word “aliens” in the caption.
The Appeal of A-Memes
So what makes memes on letter A so appealing to internet users? For one, the letter A is the first letter of the alphabet, which means it’s often associated with the beginning or the start of something. This makes it a versatile letter to use in captions, particularly for memes that involve a sequence of events. It also helps that the letter A is a simple and recognizable shape, which makes it easy to incorporate into visual memes.
Another reason why A-memes are so popular is that they’re often used in conjunction with popular culture references. For example, the “Ancient Aliens” meme is a parody of the History Channel show of the same name, which explores the possibility of extraterrestrial life in ancient history. By using the letter A in the caption, the meme is able to poke fun at the show’s obsession with aliens in a humorous way.
