What is Final Regia?
First things first: what does “Final Regia” mean? The term comes from a Mexican colloquialism that refers to the final match of a soccer tournament between two teams from the same city. In this case, the “final regia” refers to the final match of the Liga MX tournament between two teams from Monterrey: Tigres and Rayados.
The match, which took place on December 23, 2018, was a closely contested affair that ended in a 2-1 victory for Tigres. The win gave Tigres their seventh Liga MX title, while Rayados were left to rue missed opportunities.
So where do memes come into play? Well, after the match, a photo of two Rayados fans went viral on social media. The photo showed the two fans in tears, clutching each other for support. The image quickly became a meme, with people using it to express their sadness or disappointment in a humorous way.
Why is Final Regia so popular?
There are a few reasons why Final Regia has become such a popular meme. First of all, it’s a relatable situation. Most people have experienced the disappointment of their team losing an important match, so the image of the two Rayados fans is instantly recognizable.
Secondly, the image is just plain funny. The expressions on the fans’ faces are so over-the-top that it’s hard not to laugh. And finally, the fact that it’s a soccer-related meme has helped it to spread beyond just Mexico and into the wider world of football fans.
What are people saying about Final Regia?
As with any meme, Final Regia has its fans and its detractors. Some people love it and can’t get enough of the various iterations that have been created, while others find it annoying or overused.
One Twitter user wrote: “I don’t even like soccer, but I can’t stop laughing at these Final Regia memes.” Another said: “I’m a Rayados fan and even I think these memes are hilarious.”
On the other hand, some people are getting tired of seeing Final Regia everywhere they look. “Can we please move on from this meme already?” asked one Reddit user. Another tweeted: “I’ve seen so many Final Regia memes that I’m starting to feel sorry for those two fans.”
What’s next for Final Regia?
As with any meme, it’s impossible to predict how long Final Regia will continue to be popular. It could be a flash in the pan that fades away in a few weeks, or it could become a long-lasting internet phenomenon like the “Distracted Boyfriend” or “Arthur Fist” memes.
Whatever happens, one thing is for sure: Final Regia has already cemented its place in the annals of internet history. And whether you love it or hate it, you can’t deny that it’s been a fun ride.
