Back in 2019, a video of a young girl crying and singing “meme estupida mi pelo idiota” went viral on social media. The phrase, which roughly translates to “stupid meme, my stupid hair,” quickly became a meme itself and was shared widely on platforms like Twitter and Instagram.
But what exactly was the origin of this viral phenomenon? And why did it resonate so strongly with people?

The Origin of the Meme
The original video that spawned the meme was uploaded by a user named Rosalía Reyes on TikTok. In the video, her daughter can be seen crying while singing the now-famous phrase. It’s unclear why the girl was upset, but her passionate performance struck a chord with viewers.
Soon after the video was uploaded, people began remixing it and adding it to other videos for humorous effect. The phrase “meme estupida mi pelo idiota” became a catchphrase in its own right, used to express frustration or exasperation in a humorous way.
The Impact of the Meme
As with many viral memes, “meme estupida mi pelo idiota” quickly spread beyond the original platform (in this case, TikTok) and became a cultural touchstone. It was referenced in memes, songs, and even merchandise. The phrase became a shorthand for expressing feelings of annoyance or irritation, and it was embraced by people of all ages and backgrounds.
Part of the appeal of the meme was its simplicity. The phrase was easy to remember and easy to use, making it a perfect fit for social media. It also had a certain charm to it, thanks to the young girl’s passionate delivery.
Responses from People
Many people who were familiar with the meme had positive things to say about it. Some appreciated its humor and found it a lighthearted way to express their frustrations. Others enjoyed the sense of community that came from sharing in a viral phenomenon.
One Twitter user, @itsjustjordyn__, said: “I love how ‘meme estupida mi pelo idiota’ has become a universal meme. Like, everyone knows it and everyone gets it.”
However, not everyone was a fan of the meme. Some felt that it was overused and had lost its original charm. Others criticized it for appropriating a phrase from another language and culture without fully understanding its meaning.
One commenter on a YouTube video remix of the meme said: “It’s not funny anymore. It’s just another example of how people take things and run them into the ground.”
The Legacy of the Meme
While “meme estupida mi pelo idiota” may have faded from the spotlight in recent years, it remains a memorable example of the power of viral memes. It brought people together through humor and shared experience, and it provided a lighthearted way to express frustration and annoyance.
Looking back on the meme in 2023, it’s clear that it had a lasting impact on internet culture. Even if it’s no longer in heavy rotation on social media, it will always be remembered as a viral phenomenon that captured the attention of millions of people around the world.
