It’s hard to believe that it’s been 25 years since Leonardo DiCaprio burst onto the scene in the epic drama, Titanic. Since then, he’s become one of the most famous actors in the world, with a career that’s spanned decades and countless iconic roles. But in recent years, Leo has become famous for something else entirely: a meme that’s taken on a life of its own.

The Birth of the Leo DiCaprio Meme
The Leo DiCaprio meme first appeared in 2014, when a photo of the actor looking decidedly unimpressed at the Golden Globe Awards went viral. The photo, which shows Leo with a half-smile and a raised eyebrow, quickly became a go-to reaction image for people online.
But it wasn’t until a couple of years later that the meme really took off. In 2016, a Twitter user named @brokeymcpoverty tweeted a screenshot of Leo from The Great Gatsby, along with the caption “when you lied on your resume about having previous sheepdog experience”. The tweet went viral, and the Leo DiCaprio meme was born.
The Evolution of the Leo DiCaprio Meme
Since that fateful tweet, the Leo DiCaprio meme has taken on a life of its own. People have used the meme to express everything from disappointment to disbelief to general apathy. And as the years have gone by, the meme has only gotten more elaborate.
One of the most popular versions of the Leo DiCaprio meme is the “struggling to hold back laughter” meme. This meme features Leo with a hand covering his mouth, as if he’s trying (and failing) to hide his laughter. It’s been used in countless situations where someone is trying to keep a straight face, but just can’t help but crack up.
What People Are Saying About the Leo DiCaprio Meme
The Leo DiCaprio meme has become such a cultural phenomenon that even Leo himself has taken notice. In a 2019 interview with MTV News, he was asked about the meme and responded, “I have no idea what you’re talking about. I have no recollection of this.”
But Leo isn’t the only one who’s been asked about the meme. In fact, people from all walks of life have weighed in on the Leo DiCaprio meme over the years.
One Twitter user wrote, “The Leo DiCaprio meme never gets old. It’s timeless and perfect for so many situations.” Another user said, “The Leo DiCaprio meme is the greatest thing to happen to the internet since cat videos.”
Some people have even used the meme to make political statements. In 2017, a group of activists in Russia used a giant banner featuring the Leo DiCaprio meme to protest corruption in the government.
The Future of the Leo DiCaprio Meme
So, what does the future hold for the Leo DiCaprio meme? It’s hard to say for sure, but it’s safe to say that it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. As long as people continue to find new and creative ways to use the meme, it will continue to be a staple of internet culture.
And who knows? Maybe Leo himself will eventually embrace the meme and use it to promote his upcoming projects. After all, stranger things have happened on the internet.
