Released in 2013, “Tous Les Memes” is one of the most iconic songs of Belgian musician Stromae. With its catchy melody and thought-provoking lyrics, the song has captured the hearts of millions of fans worldwide. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the song, its meaning, and the impact it had on the music industry.

The Story Behind Tous Les Memes

Stromae, whose real name is Paul Van Haver, wrote “Tous Les Memes” as a response to the stereotypes and expectations placed on men and women in society. The song’s title translates to “All the Same” in English, and it’s a commentary on how both men and women are expected to conform to certain gender roles.

In an interview with The Fader, Stromae explained that the song was inspired by a conversation he had with his girlfriend about how they were both expected to act in their relationship. He said, “We realized that we were both playing a role that society had given us. And we thought, ‘That’s not us, that’s not who we are.'”

The Lyrics of Tous Les Memes

The lyrics of “Tous Les Memes” are both witty and poignant. The song’s chorus, which is repeated throughout the track, goes like this:

Tous les mêmes et y’en a marre
Changeons de sexe et de pays
Si seulement c’était aussi facile
Ce serait beau, ce serait beau hein

The chorus roughly translates to:

All the same and it’s enough
Let’s change gender and country
If only it were that easy
It would be beautiful, it would be beautiful, huh?

Throughout the song, Stromae challenges gender norms and stereotypes, highlighting the absurdity of them. For example, he sings:

Je suis pas très macho, mais j’suis trop fragile
Quand une fille me plaît, je fais tout pour qu’elle m’aime

Which translates to:

I’m not very macho, but I’m too fragile
When I like a girl, I do everything to make her love me

Stromae also addresses the idea of infidelity in the song, once again challenging the double standards that exist for men and women:

Vous les hommes êtes tous les mêmes
Macho mais cheap
Bande de mauviettes infidèles
Si prévisibles, non je ne suis pas certaine

This translates to:

You men are all the same
Macho but cheap
A bunch of unfaithful wimps
So predictable, no, I’m not sure

The Music Video

The music video for “Tous Les Memes” is just as thought-provoking as the song itself. In the video, Stromae plays both a man and a woman, switching between the two throughout the clip. The video is a commentary on the idea that men and women are expected to be opposites, but in reality, we all have both masculine and feminine traits.

The video also features a lot of symbolism, such as a chessboard where the pieces are all the same color, and a scene where Stromae is trapped in a birdcage. These images reinforce the ideas presented in the song and make the video even more powerful.

The Impact of Tous Les Memes

“Tous Les Memes” was a massive hit when it was released, topping the charts in several countries and earning critical acclaim. The song’s message resonated with people all over the world, and it sparked important conversations about gender roles and expectations.

But the impact of “Tous Les Memes” didn’t end there. The song and its accompanying music video have become iconic, inspiring countless artists and musicians. And even years after its release, “Tous Les Memes” remains just as relevant and powerful as ever.
