The Release of Yuumi
One of the biggest events in League of Legends in 2022 was the release of Yuumi, the magical cat support champion. While some players were excited to play as a cute feline, others were less than thrilled with her abilities. This led to the creation of several memes making fun of Yuumi’s lack of impact in the game. One popular meme featured a picture of a cat sleeping on a keyboard with the caption “Yuumi players be like.”
“I remember when Yuumi first came out and everyone was making fun of her for being too weak,” says League of Legends player and meme enthusiast, Jake. “But now that people have figured out how to play her, she’s actually pretty strong. I think those memes were just a way for people to cope with the frustration of not being able to win with her.”
The Rise of TFT
Teamfight Tactics (TFT) was already a popular game mode in 2021, but in 2022 it exploded in popularity. This led to a wave of new memes making fun of different aspects of the game. One popular meme featured a picture of a player’s board with all of their units dead and the caption “TFT be like.” Another popular meme was a video of a player frantically trying to move their units around during a fight, with the caption “Me trying to micro in TFT.”
“I love playing TFT, but sometimes the game can be so frustrating,” says League of Legends player and meme creator, Sarah. “Making memes about it is a way to laugh at the things that make us angry or annoyed. It’s a way to cope with the stress of the game.”
The Arrival of the Ruined King
In late 2022, Riot Games released a new cinematic featuring the Ruined King, a powerful undead warrior. This led to a wave of memes making fun of the character’s appearance, abilities, and lore. One popular meme featured a picture of the Ruined King with the caption “When you finally get the last piece of your cosplay,” poking fun at his elaborate armor. Another popular meme was a video of the Ruined King walking in slow motion with the caption “When you’re trying to look cool but you’re really just a zombie.”
“I thought the Ruined King was a really cool character, but I can see why people made fun of him,” says League of Legends player and meme fan, Alex. “He’s kind of over the top, and that’s what makes him a good target for memes.”
The Return of URF
Ultra Rapid Fire (URF) is a game mode in League of Legends that allows players to use abilities and summoner spells more frequently. In 2022, Riot Games brought back URF for a limited time, leading to a surge of memes celebrating the return of the beloved game mode. One popular meme featured a picture of a player with the caption “When you hear URF is back,” with the player jumping for joy. Another popular meme was a video of a player frantically spamming abilities during a fight, with the caption “URF be like.”
“URF is my favorite game mode in League of Legends, and I was so excited when it came back,” says League of Legends player and meme maker, John. “Making memes about URF is just a way to share that excitement with other players.”
Conclusion
League of Legends memes have been a staple of the community for years, and 2022 was no exception. From new champion releases to game updates, there was plenty of material for players to work with. While some memes were made out of frustration or annoyance, others were made out of love and excitement for the game. Regardless of the reason, memes are a way for players to come together and share their experiences with one another.
