The year was 2018, and the internet was abuzz with a new meme featuring a red echidna from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Dubbed the “Knuckles meme,” it featured an image of the character with his fists clenched, accompanied by a variety of humorous captions and remixes of his iconic “Oh no” catchphrase.
For a time, the Knuckles meme was everywhere. It spawned countless variations and inspired countless imitators. It even caught the attention of mainstream media outlets, who marveled at the power of internet culture to create and spread viral sensations.
But as with all things, the Knuckles meme’s reign eventually came to an end. In the years since its initial explosion onto the scene, it has become a relic of a bygone era of internet culture. And now, in 2023, it seems that even the character’s creators have had enough.

The Rise of the Knuckles Meme
The origins of the Knuckles meme are somewhat murky, but it seems to have emerged from the bowels of the internet’s meme-making communities in early 2018. It quickly gained traction on sites like Reddit and 4chan, where users eagerly shared their own variations and remixes of the original image.
Part of the meme’s appeal lay in its sheer absurdity. The image of Knuckles with his fists clenched was a perfect canvas for all kinds of humorous captions and scenarios, from the surreal to the downright nonsensical.
Soon, the meme had spread far beyond its initial creators and was being shared on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. It even made its way into mainstream media outlets, where it was hailed as a testament to the power of internet culture to create and spread viral sensations.
The Fall of the Knuckles Meme
As with all viral sensations, the Knuckles meme’s popularity eventually began to wane. By mid-2018, it had largely faded from the public consciousness, replaced by newer memes and trends.
But even as the meme’s popularity declined, its legacy continued to live on. It had spawned countless imitators and variations, and its influence could be seen in the countless other memes that followed in its wake.
However, it seems that even the character’s creators have grown tired of the Knuckles meme. In a recent interview, a representative from Sega (the company behind the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise) expressed frustration with the meme’s continued use.
The End of an Era
For fans of the Knuckles meme, this news may come as a disappointment. But it’s important to remember that all memes are ultimately ephemeral. They come and go with lightning speed, leaving behind little more than a few laughs and a lot of memories.
And while the Knuckles meme may be on its way out, there will undoubtedly be countless others to take its place. The internet moves fast, and there’s always something new and exciting just around the corner.
Responses to the News
Unsurprisingly, the news of the Knuckles meme’s demise has generated a range of reactions from fans and casual observers alike. Some have expressed disappointment, while others have shrugged it off as just another passing trend.
One Reddit user lamented, “It’s a shame to see such a classic meme go. But I suppose all good things must come to an end eventually.”
Others were more sanguine, with one Twitter user joking, “Looks like Knuckles is finally saying ‘oh no’ to the meme for good.”
Regardless of how people feel about the news, it’s clear that the Knuckles meme has left an indelible mark on internet culture. And who knows? Maybe someday it will make a comeback, bigger and better than ever before.
