The Song and its Lyrics
The song, titled “I’m a Genius,” features Kanye’s signature auto-tuned vocals over a trap beat. The lyrics, however, are what really caught people’s attention. The chorus goes:
“I’m a genius, I’m a god, I’m the greatest of all time
Ain’t no one gonna tell me what to do, I’m on my own grind
Haters gonna hate, but they can’t bring me down
I’m Kanye, baby, and I wear the crown.”
The lyrics are classic Kanye West, full of ego and bravado. But it’s the repetition of the phrase “I’m a genius” that really struck a chord with internet users, who turned it into a meme.
The Meme
The “I’m a Genius” meme involves people creating videos of themselves doing a silly dance while mouthing the words to the chorus. The dance is simple but distinctive: it involves thrusting your arms forward and back while shaking your hips.
The meme quickly spread across social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, with people from all over the world creating their own versions. Celebrities like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Ellen DeGeneres even got in on the action, sharing their own “I’m a Genius” videos with their followers.
The Response
While some people found the meme amusing, others criticized it for promoting narcissism and self-centeredness. Some even accused Kanye of intentionally creating the song and dance to feed his own ego.
However, many fans of the rapper defended him and the meme, arguing that it was all in good fun and that Kanye was simply embracing his own greatness.
One Twitter user wrote: “I don’t see what’s wrong with the ‘I’m a Genius’ meme. Kanye is a genius, and he’s just owning it. It’s funny and harmless.”
The Legacy
While the “I’m a Genius” meme eventually died down, it left a lasting impact on internet culture. It showed just how powerful memes can be in spreading a message or creating a trend.
It also cemented Kanye West’s status as a pop culture icon, for better or for worse. Love him or hate him, there’s no denying the impact he has had on music and popular culture.
Conclusion
The Kanye West meme song of 2022 was a viral sensation that captured the attention of millions of people around the world. While it may have been criticized by some, it ultimately showed the power of memes in shaping internet culture.
