What is the “If She Wears a Choker” Meme?
The “If she wears a choker” meme is a humorous observation that suggests that women who wear chokers are more likely to be sexually adventurous or kinky. The meme usually features a picture of a woman wearing a choker necklace, followed by the caption “If she wears a choker, she’s into some freaky sh*t.” It’s often shared on social media as a joke or a way to flirt with someone who wears a choker.
The meme first gained popularity on Tumblr in the early 2010s and quickly spread to other social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. It’s been used in various contexts, from playful banter between friends to more serious discussions about women’s sexuality and empowerment.
Why Does the Meme Matter?
While the “If she wears a choker” meme may seem harmless and funny at first glance, it actually reinforces harmful stereotypes about women and their sexuality. The meme implies that women who wear chokers are somehow more sexually available or promiscuous than women who don’t, which is not only untrue but also dangerous.
By perpetuating this stereotype, the meme contributes to a culture that objectifies and devalues women based on their appearance. It also puts pressure on women to conform to certain beauty standards in order to be considered desirable or attractive.
The Choker Necklace: A Brief History
The choker necklace has been a popular fashion accessory for centuries, dating back to ancient civilizations like the Egyptians and the Greeks. In the Victorian era, chokers became a symbol of wealth and high fashion, worn by aristocratic women to enhance their beauty and elegance.
In the 1990s, chokers made a comeback as a popular accessory for teenage girls and young women, often worn as a symbol of rebellion or subculture. This trend continued into the early 2000s and has since become a staple in many women’s wardrobes.
Responses to the Meme
The “If she wears a choker” meme has sparked a range of responses from people who have seen it on social media. Some people find it funny and harmless, while others see it as sexist and problematic.
One Twitter user wrote, “Lol at the ‘if she wears a choker she’s into some freaky sh*t’ meme. It’s like saying if she wears a bracelet she’s into BDSM.” Another user responded, “It’s not just about the choker, it’s about the stereotype that women who look a certain way are more likely to be sexually available.”
Some women have also shared their personal experiences with wearing chokers and how they’ve been judged or objectified because of it. One woman wrote, “I wear a choker because I like the way it looks, not because I’m trying to signal anything to anyone. It’s frustrating that people assume things about me based on what I wear.”
The Bottom Line
The “If she wears a choker” meme may seem like a harmless joke, but it actually reinforces harmful stereotypes about women and their sexuality. It’s important to recognize the impact that these types of memes can have on our culture and to challenge them when we see them.
Ultimately, women should be free to wear whatever they want without fear of judgment or objectification. Whether it’s a choker necklace or a pair of sweatpants, fashion should be a personal choice that reflects individual style and preferences.
