It’s been almost six years since the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union, but the ramifications of the historic decision are still being felt to this day. Amidst the chaos and uncertainty of Brexit, one meme has emerged as a symbol of the absurdity of it all: “Hold my drink.”

What is the “Hold My Drink” Meme?

The “Hold my drink” meme is a phrase that’s typically used to signal that something outrageous or unbelievable is about to happen. The idea is that the person saying “hold my drink” is about to do something so wild that they need to put their drink down first.

In the case of Brexit, the meme has taken on a life of its own. It’s often used to describe the latest twist or turn in the ongoing saga of the UK’s departure from the EU. Whether it’s a ridiculous statement from a politician, a major setback in negotiations, or just another absurd development, “hold my drink” has become a shorthand way of saying “you won’t believe this.”

Why Has the Meme Become So Popular?

Part of the reason for the meme’s popularity is that Brexit has been such a long and drawn-out process. It’s been nearly six years since the referendum, and there’s still no clear end in sight. As a result, people are looking for ways to cope with the ongoing uncertainty and chaos.

The “hold my drink” meme provides a way for people to laugh at the absurdity of it all. It’s a reminder that, no matter how crazy things get, there’s always something even more ridiculous around the corner.

Response from People Who Know It

According to Michael Wilson, a professor of communication and media studies at the University of California, the “hold my drink” meme is an example of how people use humor to cope with difficult or stressful situations.

“Brexit has been a particularly stressful and divisive issue, so it’s not surprising that people are turning to humor to deal with it,” Wilson says. “The ‘hold my drink’ meme is a way for people to signal that they’re about to say or do something outrageous, which can be a way of releasing tension and making light of the situation.”

“Hold my Drink” in the Media

The “hold my drink” meme has also made its way into the media. In a recent interview with BBC News, comedian and writer David Mitchell used the phrase to describe the ongoing Brexit negotiations.

“It’s a bit like a group of people in a bar trying to decide where to go next,” Mitchell said. “They’re all shouting different things, and nobody can agree. It’s like someone saying ‘hold my drink, I’ve got an idea,’ and then coming up with something completely ridiculous.”

The Future of the Meme

As for the future of the “hold my drink” meme, it’s hard to say. Brexit is still very much a live issue, and there are sure to be more twists and turns in the coming months and years. But one thing is for sure: as long as there’s chaos and uncertainty in the world, people will continue to find ways to laugh about it.

So, the next time you hear someone say “hold my drink,” just remember: things are about to get even more ridiculous than they already are.
