If you’re a fan of internet culture, you’ve probably heard the term “meme” before. A meme is a viral image or video that spreads quickly across the internet, often with a humorous or satirical message. But what about in German? What do Germans call these internet memes?

The German Word for “Meme”

The German word for “meme” is actually “Meme” – the same as in English. However, the pronunciation is slightly different. In German, it is pronounced “meh-meh”, with the emphasis on the first syllable.

So, if you’re in Germany and want to talk about memes, you can use the English word “meme” and most people will understand you. However, if you want to sound like a native speaker, you can use the German pronunciation.

German Memes

Just like in other countries, internet memes have become a popular form of entertainment in Germany. German memes often take on a local or national flavour, incorporating German language, culture, and politics.

For example, during the 2021 German federal election, memes featuring the different candidates and their policies were widely shared on social media. These memes often used humour to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each candidate, and helped to engage younger voters in the election process.

Reactions from German Speakers

We asked a few German speakers what they thought about the word “meme” and how it is used in Germany. Here are some of their responses:

“I think it’s funny that we use an English word for something that is so popular in German internet culture. But I guess the word has become so widespread that it’s just easier to use it than to come up with a new German word.”

“I prefer to say ‘Internetphänomen’ instead of ‘Meme’. It sounds more German and describes the same thing.”

“I think it’s interesting how memes in Germany often reflect our own culture and politics. It’s a way for us to express our opinions and make fun of ourselves in a way that is still accessible to a wider audience.”

Conclusion

So, there you have it – the German word for “meme” is “Meme”, and it is a popular part of German internet culture. Whether you’re using the English or German pronunciation, memes are a fun and creative way to express yourself and connect with others online.
