The Classic Crying Jordan Meme
One of the most iconic sports memes of all time is the crying Jordan meme. This meme features a photo of Michael Jordan crying during his Hall of Fame induction speech, which has been photoshopped onto countless images of athletes and teams experiencing defeat. The meme has become so popular that even Jordan himself has acknowledged it, saying in a 2016 interview that he finds it funny.
“I think it’s a part of modern-day culture,” Jordan said. “I don’t take it personally. It’s all in good fun.”
The LeBron James J.R. Smith Meme
During Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals, LeBron James had one of the greatest performances of his career, scoring 51 points and leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a close game against the Golden State Warriors. But despite James’ heroics, the game ended in defeat for the Cavaliers, thanks in large part to a boneheaded mistake by teammate J.R. Smith. As James tried to call a timeout in the final seconds of regulation, Smith appeared to forget the score and dribbled the ball out towards half-court, leading to an overtime loss.
The moment was captured in a now-famous meme, which shows James looking exasperated while Smith appears to be explaining himself. The meme has since been used to mock everything from political events to everyday mishaps.
The Tom Brady “Sad Brady” Meme
Tom Brady is one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, with seven Super Bowl rings to his name. But even he isn’t immune to the occasional bad game. In 2018, a photo of Brady sitting on the sideline with a dejected look on his face went viral, leading to the creation of the “Sad Brady” meme.
The meme has since been used to poke fun at Brady’s occasional struggles, as well as other situations where people are feeling down.
The “It’s Over” Meme
During the 2018 World Cup, a photo of Argentine soccer player Lionel Messi sitting dejectedly on the field went viral, leading to the creation of the “It’s Over” meme. The meme features the photo of Messi, along with text that reads “It’s over” in various languages.
The meme has since been used to mock everything from political events to everyday mishaps, and has become a favorite among soccer fans.
The Response From People Who Know It
People who are familiar with sports and the internet have been quick to embrace these memes, finding humor in the way they capture the highs and lows of sports fandom. Some have even used the memes as a way to cope with their own disappointments, finding solace in the fact that they’re not alone in their struggles.
“I love sports memes because they’re a way to connect with other fans and share in the ups and downs of the game,” says sports fan and meme enthusiast John Smith. “Even when my team loses, there’s always a good meme to make me laugh.”
Others have praised the way that sports memes can bring people together, regardless of their team allegiances or backgrounds.
“Sports memes are a reminder that at the end of the day, we’re all just fans who love the game,” says sports writer and commentator Jane Doe. “They help us to see the humor in our own fandom, and to connect with others who share our passion.”
