The Origins of English Language Memes
The first English language memes started popping up on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter around the early 2010s. They quickly gained popularity and soon became a staple of online humor.
One of the earliest examples of an English language meme is the “I can haz cheeseburger” meme. This meme features a picture of a cat with the caption “I can haz cheeseburger”, which is deliberately misspelled to make it sound like the cat is speaking in broken English.
Another popular early meme was the “all your base are belong to us” meme. This meme originated from a poorly translated video game and features the phrase “all your base are belong to us” written in broken English.
Why English Language Memes are So Popular
English language memes are popular for a variety of reasons. For one, they are often very relatable. Many people have experienced the frustration of trying to learn English as a second language or have made similar spelling and grammar mistakes themselves.
Additionally, English language memes are often very clever and play on the quirks and nuances of the language. They can be a great way to demonstrate a deep understanding of English and its many idiosyncrasies.

“Let’s eat, Grandma” vs. “Let’s eat Grandma”

“Your vs. You’re”
This meme is a classic and has been around for years. It features a picture of a teacher with the caption “I know the difference between your and you’re. Do you?”
“I before E except after C”
This meme pokes fun at the many exceptions to the “I before E except after C” rule in English. It features a picture of a confused-looking child with the caption “I before E except after C… and when sounding like A as in neighbor and weigh, and on weekends and holidays, and all throughout May, and YOU’LL ALWAYS BE WRONG NO MATTER WHAT YOU SAY!”
