It all started in 2019 when a video of Brazilian actor Fabio Assunção getting arrested for drunk driving went viral. But it wasn’t the arrest itself that caught people’s attention, it was the way Assunção’s name was pronounced by the police officer in the video. The officer’s thick Northeastern accent made it sound like he was saying “Fabio Assunção” instead of “Fabio Assunção,” and the internet went wild.

The Birth of the Memes

Within days of the video being posted online, memes featuring Assunção’s name began popping up all over social media. They ranged from simple text memes to elaborate video remixes, and they all had one thing in common: they were hilarious.

One popular meme featured a photoshopped picture of Assunção’s face on a bottle of alcohol, with the caption “Drink responsibly, or you’ll end up like me.” Another showed Assunção standing next to a cardboard cutout of himself, with the caption “When you’re so famous you need a body double.”

The Reaction from Fabio Assunção

Despite the jokes at his expense, Fabio Assunção took it all in stride. In fact, he even got in on the fun himself, posting a meme of himself on Instagram with the caption “I’m laughing with you, not at you.”
