Origins of the Water Meme SpongeBob
The water meme SpongeBob originated in the fourth episode of the show’s third season, titled “The Bully.” In this episode, SpongeBob is being bullied by a new character named Flats the Flounder. Flats challenges SpongeBob to a fight, and SpongeBob spends the entire episode trying to avoid the confrontation. In one scene, SpongeBob is shown running through Bikini Bottom, and he stops to take a drink of water from a drinking fountain. The way he drinks the water, with a peculiar face and exaggerated gulps, is what inspired the meme.
However, it wasn’t until years later that the water meme SpongeBob became popular on the internet. In 2016, a Twitter user by the name of @lexie_galaxie tweeted a video of herself imitating SpongeBob’s water drinking face. The tweet went viral, and the meme took off from there.
