Back in 2018, the world was introduced to the concept of “Executive Time” thanks to a leaked schedule of former US President Donald Trump. The schedule showed that Trump spent a significant amount of time each day in unstructured, unscheduled “Executive Time.” This quickly became a meme, with people poking fun at Trump’s seemingly lackadaisical approach to running the country. But what is the Trump Executive Time meme, and why has it persisted until 2023?

The Origins of the Trump Executive Time Meme

The Trump Executive Time meme began in January 2018, when Axios obtained a leak of the President’s private schedule. The schedule revealed that Trump was spending approximately 60% of his time in unstructured “Executive Time,” which was not accounted for in the official schedule. This prompted criticism from many quarters, with people questioning whether the President was taking his duties seriously.

Almost immediately, people began making jokes about the concept of Executive Time. Memes featuring Trump lounging on a couch or golfing accompanied by captions like “Executive Time” quickly spread across social media. The meme became so popular that even Trump himself eventually acknowledged it, tweeting in February 2018 that “The media was able to get my work schedule, something very easy to do, but it should have been reported as a positive, not negative. When the term Executive Time is used, I am generally working, not relaxing.”

The Persistence of the Trump Executive Time Meme

Despite Trump’s attempts to downplay the concept of Executive Time, the meme has persisted. Even now, in 2023, people still use the term to mock politicians who appear to be slacking off on the job. The reason for this persistence likely has to do with the fact that Executive Time taps into a broader cultural anxiety about productivity and work ethic.

In recent years, there has been a growing focus on productivity and efficiency, with people feeling pressure to work harder and longer hours than ever before. In this context, the concept of a world leader spending most of their day in unstructured “Executive Time” seems almost absurd. The meme allows people to express their frustration with the perceived lack of productivity among politicians, while also providing a bit of levity to an otherwise serious topic.

Responses to the Trump Executive Time Meme

Not everyone finds the Trump Executive Time meme funny, however. Some people argue that it perpetuates the myth of the “lazy politician,” and that it unfairly targets Trump specifically. Others point out that there are valid reasons for a leader to have unstructured time in their schedule, such as for brainstorming or strategic planning.

Despite these criticisms, the meme shows no signs of disappearing any time soon. As long as there are politicians who appear to be shirking their responsibilities, people will likely continue to use the term “Executive Time” to make fun of them. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing is up for debate, but one thing is for sure: the Trump Executive Time meme has left an indelible mark on the political landscape.
