In 2023, it’s hard to believe that just a few years ago, a meme involving a hypothetical earthquake in Melbourne took the internet by storm. While the meme itself has largely faded from the public consciousness, it’s worth examining how and why it became such a sensation, and what its enduring legacy might be.

The Birth of the Meme

The Melbourne earthquake meme first appeared on social media in late 2020, during a time when the world was already grappling with a pandemic and a host of other challenges. The meme was simple: it posited the hypothetical scenario of a massive earthquake striking Melbourne, and encouraged people to “prepare” by sharing photos of themselves with items like helmets and emergency kits.

While the meme was clearly intended as a joke, it quickly took on a life of its own. People from all over the world began participating, and the hashtag #MelbourneEarthquake went viral. Some people took the joke more seriously than others, with some even going so far as to create elaborate earthquake preparation plans.

The Reaction

As with any viral phenomenon, there were both positive and negative reactions to the Melbourne earthquake meme. Some people found it to be a humorous distraction from the anxieties of the time, while others criticized it for trivializing the very real dangers of earthquakes.

One person who was not amused was Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp, who released a statement condemning the meme as “irresponsible and insensitive.” Capp pointed out that Melbourne is not in a high-risk earthquake zone, and that joking about disasters can be harmful to people who have experienced real trauma.

The Legacy

Today, the Melbourne earthquake meme is largely a thing of the past. However, it’s worth considering what its legacy might be. On the one hand, it could be seen as a harmless bit of fun that helped people cope with a difficult time. On the other hand, it could be seen as an example of the internet’s ability to take things too far and potentially cause harm.

Some people who participated in the meme have reflected on what it meant to them. One person, who goes by the username @earthquakeprepper on Instagram, said that the meme helped her feel more prepared for emergencies in general. “It made me realize that I didn’t have any kind of plan in place for if something bad happened,” she said. “So even though it was a joke, it got me thinking about what I would do if there was a real emergency.”

Expert Opinion

To get a better sense of the potential risks and benefits of memes like the Melbourne earthquake, we spoke to Dr. Sarah Roberts, a professor of communication at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

“Memes like this can be a way for people to process difficult or traumatic events in a more lighthearted way,” Roberts said. “But there’s also the risk that it can trivialize serious issues and make people less likely to take real threats seriously.”

Final Thoughts

Looking back on the Melbourne earthquake meme from 2023, it’s clear that there are no easy answers when it comes to the potential benefits and risks of viral phenomena like this. While it’s important to be mindful of the potential harm that can come from trivializing serious issues, it’s also important to recognize the role that humor and playfulness can play in helping people cope with difficult times.

In the end, the legacy of the Melbourne earthquake meme will likely be a complex one, with both positive and negative aspects. But no matter how we choose to remember it, one thing is certain: it will always be a reminder of the power of the internet to bring people together, for better or for worse.
