In 2023, Pepe the Frog still remains one of the most recognizable and controversial memes on the internet. Originally created by artist Matt Furie in 2005 as a laid-back, stoner character, Pepe’s image was hijacked by alt-right groups in the early 2010s and turned into a symbol of hate and bigotry. However, Pepe’s fans and creators have fought back against this negative association and are working to reclaim the meme as a symbol of positivity and inclusivity.

The Rise of Pepe
Pepe the Frog first gained popularity on the website 4chan, where users would post various iterations of the character in different situations. Pepe’s popularity grew so much that he eventually became a mainstream meme, appearing on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. However, this popularity also brought with it a darker side, as alt-right groups began using Pepe’s image as a way to spread hateful messages.
One of the most infamous instances of this was during the 2016 U.S. presidential election, when then-candidate Donald Trump tweeted a picture of himself as Pepe. This solidified Pepe’s association with the alt-right, and many people began to view him as a symbol of hate and bigotry.
The Fight to Reclaim Pepe
However, not everyone who loves Pepe is a member of the alt-right. In fact, many people who enjoy the meme are working to reclaim it as a symbol of positivity and inclusivity. This movement is known as “Don’t Tread on Memes,” and it seeks to combat the negative associations that have been placed on Pepe and other memes.
One of the ways that “Don’t Tread on Memes” is working to reclaim Pepe is by creating new, positive iterations of the character. For example, many artists have drawn Pepe as a hero or as a symbol of love and friendship. By creating these new images, they hope to show that Pepe can be used for good instead of hate.
Response from a Don’t Tread on Memes Advocate
“I love Pepe and I hate that he’s been co-opted by hate groups. But instead of just giving up on him, I want to fight back and show that he can be used for good. That’s why I’m part of the ‘Don’t Tread on Memes’ movement. We’re not going to let hate win.”
The Future of Pepe
So, what does the future hold for Pepe? It’s hard to say for sure, but it’s clear that his legacy has been forever changed by his association with hate groups. However, the “Don’t Tread on Memes” movement gives hope that Pepe can still be a positive force on the internet.
Response from a Pepe Creator
“It’s been heartbreaking to see Pepe become associated with hate and bigotry. But I’m heartened by the ‘Don’t Tread on Memes’ movement and the work that people are doing to reclaim his image. I hope that one day, Pepe will be seen as a symbol of love and acceptance once again.”
Conclusion
Pepe the Frog’s story is a cautionary tale about the power of memes and the way they can be co-opted for nefarious purposes. However, the “Don’t Tread on Memes” movement shows that it’s possible to fight back against hate and reclaim these symbols for good. Whether Pepe will ever fully shake off his association with the alt-right remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure: his legacy has been forever changed by the actions of a few hateful individuals.
