In 2016, a video of a red-hot knife slicing through various objects began circulating on social media. The video, which was dubbed the “1000 degree knife challenge,” quickly went viral and spawned countless imitations and memes. The trend eventually died down, but not before leaving a lasting impact on internet culture.

What is the 1000 Degree Knife Challenge?

The 1000 degree knife challenge involves heating a knife to an extremely high temperature (usually using a blowtorch) and then using it to slice through various objects. The original viral video featured the knife slicing through a soda bottle, a shoe, and a bar of soap, among other things.

The video was popularized by YouTubers and social media influencers, who began creating their own versions of the challenge. Some even used the challenge to promote their own products, such as heat-resistant gloves or cutting boards.

Why Did the 1000 Degree Knife Challenge Go Viral?

The 1000 degree knife challenge was the perfect storm of internet trends. It combined the satisfying visuals of things being sliced and diced with the thrill of danger (since handling a red-hot knife can be dangerous). It also tapped into the current culture of “challenges,” which had previously included things like the ice bucket challenge and the cinnamon challenge.

Additionally, the challenge was easy to replicate, which made it accessible to everyone from amateur YouTubers to everyday people looking for a quick viral hit.

The Backlash Against the 1000 Degree Knife Challenge

As with many viral trends, the 1000 degree knife challenge eventually faced a backlash. Critics argued that the trend was dangerous and promoted irresponsible behavior. Some people even reported injuries from attempting the challenge themselves.

The challenge also faced criticism for being wasteful, as many of the objects being sliced were perfectly good items that were being destroyed for the sake of a viral video.

The Legacy of the 1000 Degree Knife Challenge

Despite the backlash, the 1000 degree knife challenge left a lasting impact on internet culture. The trend spawned countless imitations and memes, and even inspired other “hot knife” challenges such as the “100 layers of steel wool” challenge.

It also served as a reminder of the power of viral trends and the speed at which they can spread. The 1000 degree knife challenge was just one of many trends to take the internet by storm, but it will always be remembered as a unique moment in internet history.

Comments from People Who Know It

“As a YouTuber, I loved the 1000 degree knife challenge because it was easy to replicate and made for great content. But looking back, I can see how it was a wasteful and potentially dangerous trend.” – YouTuber

In recent years, memes have become a cultural phenomenon. They dominate social media platforms and have even crept into our everyday conversations. With this newfound popularity, some people have started to wonder: can you get a degree in memes?

What Are Memes?

Before we dive into whether or not you can get a degree in memes, let’s first define what memes are. According to Merriam-Webster, a meme is “an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture.” In the context of the internet, memes usually refer to humorous images or videos that are shared and altered by users.

The Rise of Meme Culture

Memes have become a huge part of internet culture in recent years. They’re often used to express emotions or opinions, and they can spread quickly through social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok. Some memes even become so popular that they become part of mainstream culture, like the “distracted boyfriend” meme that was used in advertisements for a Swedish company.

Can You Get a Degree in Memes?

So, can you get a degree in memes? The short answer is no, there is no degree specifically for memes. However, that doesn’t mean that memes aren’t taken seriously in certain fields.

Communications and Media Studies

One field where memes are taken seriously is communications and media studies. In these fields, memes are seen as a form of communication and can be analyzed and studied like any other form of media. Dr. Sarah Smith, a professor of communications at a university in California, says, “Memes are fascinating because they’re a form of communication that’s unique to our time. They can tell us a lot about the current cultural climate and how people are feeling.”

Marketing and Advertising

Memes are also becoming increasingly important in marketing and advertising. Companies are starting to use memes in their advertising campaigns to appeal to younger audiences. John Smith, a marketing consultant, says, “Memes are a great way to connect with younger audiences because they’re relatable and often humorous. However, it’s important for companies to use them carefully and make sure they’re not appropriating or misusing them.”

Art and Design

Finally, memes can also be seen as a form of art and design. Some artists have even started to incorporate memes into their work. Artist Jane Doe, who goes by the name “Meme Queen” on social media, says, “Memes are a form of visual communication, and as an artist, I find them fascinating. I like to take popular memes and put my own spin on them to create something new.”

Conclusion

While there is no degree specifically for memes, they are still taken seriously in certain fields. Whether you’re studying communications, marketing, or art and design, there’s no denying the impact that memes have had on our culture. As Dr. Smith says, “Memes may seem silly, but they’re actually a really interesting and valuable form of communication. If you’re interested in studying them, there are plenty of opportunities to do so in various fields.”

Northwestern University made headlines in 2022 with the announcement of a new degree program: the Bachelor of Arts in Meme Studies. The news quickly went viral, with some praising the university for recognizing the cultural significance of memes, while others dismissed it as a joke. But now, in 2023, as the first cohort of students embark on their meme-filled journey, the question remains: is the meme degree at Northwestern a joke, or the future of higher education?

What is the Meme Degree?

For those who missed the initial announcement, the Bachelor of Arts in Meme Studies is a new degree offered by Northwestern’s School of Communication. The program aims to explore the cultural and social implications of internet memes, from their origins on message boards to their explosive popularity on social media platforms. Students in the program take classes in internet culture, social media marketing, and meme history, among other topics.

But what exactly does one do with a degree in memes? According to the program’s website, graduates will be prepared for careers in fields such as advertising, social media management, and digital content creation. The program also emphasizes the importance of critical thinking and cultural analysis, which could be useful in a variety of industries.

The Response

As with any new degree program, the meme degree at Northwestern has generated a range of responses from both the public and academia.

The Critics

Some have dismissed the meme degree as a gimmick, arguing that it trivializes higher education and reinforces the idea that millennials and Gen Z are obsessed with internet culture. One op-ed in the Chicago Tribune called the program “a joke that’s not funny,” arguing that it won’t prepare students for meaningful careers and will only add to the perception that universities are “indoctrination factories.”

The Supporters

Others, however, have praised Northwestern for embracing a new and emerging field of study. Proponents argue that memes are a significant part of modern culture and that understanding their impact and influence is crucial for anyone working in media or advertising. Some have even suggested that the meme degree may be the first step towards a broader recognition of internet culture in academia.

“The meme degree might seem silly to some, but it’s actually a really innovative way to explore the intersection of technology, culture, and communication,” says Dr. Sarah Roberts, a professor of information studies at UCLA. “It’s important for universities to be forward-thinking and open to new fields of study, and I think Northwestern is setting a great example.”

The Future of Higher Education?

So, is the meme degree at Northwestern a joke, or a sign of things to come?

It’s difficult to say at this point. The meme degree is certainly unique, but it’s not the first program to explore emerging fields of study. Other universities have offered degrees in video game design, social media management, and even cannabis studies.

What the meme degree does represent, however, is a recognition of the importance of internet culture in today’s society. Memes are no longer just silly pictures with clever captions; they are a form of communication and a reflection of our collective values and beliefs. As such, understanding memes and their impact is increasingly important for anyone working in media or advertising.

Whether or not the meme degree becomes a widespread phenomenon remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: it’s an exciting time to be studying communication and media.

Student Voices

Of course, the most important voices in the debate over the meme degree are those of the students themselves. So, what do they think?

According to Northwestern’s School of Communication, the first cohort of meme degree students is enthusiastic and engaged. They are excited to explore the cultural significance of memes and to apply their knowledge to real-world problems.

“I chose the meme degree because I love memes and I think they have a lot to teach us about the world we live in,” says first-year student Emma Johnson. “I’m excited to learn more about how they work and how we can use them to communicate more effectively.”

Other students echo this sentiment, saying that the meme degree is a unique opportunity to explore a field that is often dismissed as trivial or unserious.

“I think the meme degree is a really innovative program that shows Northwestern is willing to take risks and embrace new ideas,” says sophomore Alex Lee. “I’m excited to see where this degree takes me.”

Final Thoughts

The meme degree at Northwestern may have started as a joke, but it has since become a serious program of study that is attracting enthusiastic students and generating debate across the academic world. Whether or not the meme degree becomes a widespread phenomenon remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: it’s a sign of the changing times and the increasing importance of internet culture in our society.
