In 2021, the internet was abuzz with a new meme featuring a picture of a diamond engagement ring with the caption “It’s not a diamond, it’s cubic zirconia.” The meme was meant to poke fun at the idea that material possessions, including engagement rings, are more important than the love and commitment between two people.

As the meme gained popularity, it also sparked a conversation about the ethics of the diamond industry and the high cost of engagement rings. Many people began to question the societal pressure to spend thousands of dollars on a diamond ring and instead opt for a more affordable and ethical option like cubic zirconia.

The Backlash

However, as with most internet trends, the cubic zirconia meme soon faced a backlash. Some people felt that the joke was in poor taste and insulting to those who had chosen to invest in a diamond ring. Others pointed out that cubic zirconia is not the same as a diamond and therefore the comparison was unfair.

One Twitter user commented, “As someone who saved for years to buy a diamond ring for my wife, this meme is incredibly offensive. There is nothing wrong with choosing a less expensive option, but don’t belittle those who make a different choice.”

The Debate Continues

Despite the backlash, the cubic zirconia meme continued to circulate on social media. Some people used it as a way to promote ethical and affordable alternatives to diamonds, while others saw it as a way to make a statement about the importance of love over material possessions.

One Instagram user wrote, “I don’t care if my engagement ring is made of plastic, as long as it represents the love and commitment between me and my partner. Let’s stop putting so much emphasis on the price tag.”

Expert Opinion

To get a better understanding of the debate surrounding the cubic zirconia meme, we spoke to jewelry expert and gemologist, Sarah Johnson.

“While I understand the sentiment behind the meme, I think it’s important to remember that diamonds and cubic zirconia are not the same thing. Diamonds are a natural gemstone that are incredibly rare and valuable, while cubic zirconia is a man-made stone that is much more affordable.”

Johnson went on to explain that while there is nothing wrong with choosing a less expensive option, it’s important to be transparent about what you are buying.

Final Thoughts

The cubic zirconia meme may have sparked a conversation about the ethics of the diamond industry and the high cost of engagement rings, but it also highlighted the importance of being respectful of other people’s choices. While there is no right or wrong way to express your love and commitment, it’s important to remember that the material possessions we choose to invest in do not define the strength of our relationships.

As one Reddit user put it, “The cubic zirconia meme may have been funny at first, but it’s time to move on. Let’s focus on what really matters – the love and commitment between two people.”
