The rivalry between Club America and Pumas UNAM is one of the most intense in Mexican soccer. These two teams have been facing each other since 1962, and their matches are always filled with tension, excitement, and drama. However, in recent years, this rivalry has taken on a new dimension, as fans of both teams have started using memes to mock each other.

What are Memes?

If you’re not familiar with memes, they are images, videos, or pieces of text that are spread rapidly across the internet, often with humorous or satirical intent. Memes can be created by anyone, and they often reflect the popular culture and societal issues of the moment.

When it comes to soccer, memes are a way for fans to express their opinions, poke fun at their rivals, and show their support for their team. Memes have become an integral part of the soccer culture in Mexico, and the rivalry between America and Pumas has given rise to some of the funniest and most creative memes out there.

Why the Rivalry?

The America-Pumas rivalry is rooted in geography, as both teams are based in Mexico City. However, there are also historical and cultural factors at play. America is one of the most successful teams in Mexican soccer history, with 13 league titles and seven CONCACAF Champions League titles. Pumas, on the other hand, has won 7 league titles and 3 CONCACAF Champions League titles. Despite this difference in success, Pumas has a passionate fan base and is known for playing attractive, attacking soccer.

As a result, matches between these two teams are always intense and competitive. Both sets of fans are known for their loyalty and passion, and this has given rise to some of the most creative memes in the soccer world.

The Best Memes

One of the most popular memes in the America-Pumas rivalry is the “Puma llorando” meme. This meme features a photo of a Pumas fan crying, and it is used to mock Pumas fans when they lose to America. Another popular meme is the “America es grande” meme, which features a photo of an America fan holding up a sign that says “America es grande” (America is great). This meme is used to taunt Pumas fans after an America victory.

There are also memes that poke fun at specific incidents or players. For example, after a controversial penalty was awarded to America during a match against Pumas, a meme featuring a photo of the referee holding up a red card with the caption “penal para el America” (penalty for America) went viral. Another popular meme features a photo of America player Renato Ibarra with the caption “Renato Ibarra corre como Naruto” (Renato Ibarra runs like Naruto), a reference to the popular anime character.

What Do Fans Think?

We asked some fans of both America and Pumas what they thought about the memes, and the responses were mixed. Some fans thought that the memes were hilarious and a great way to express their love for their team, while others thought that they were disrespectful and took away from the spirit of the game.

“I love the memes, they’re so funny,” said America fan Juan Carlos. “It’s just a way to show our passion for our team and have a good time.”

However, Pumas fan Maria Lopez had a different view. “I don’t like the memes, they’re just mean-spirited and disrespectful,” she said. “We should be focusing on the game and the players, not making fun of each other.”

The Future of the Rivalry

Regardless of what fans think about the memes, it’s clear that the America-Pumas rivalry is as strong as ever. Both teams have passionate fan bases, talented players, and a long history of success. While the memes may come and go, the rivalry will continue to be a key part of Mexican soccer culture for years to come.

So, the next time America and Pumas face off on the pitch, keep an eye out for the memes. They may just be the funniest thing you see all day.

In 2018, the world witnessed a remarkable football match between River Plate and Boca Juniors, two of the biggest clubs in Argentina. The match was the second leg of the Copa Libertadores final, the most prestigious club competition in South America. However, the game was not played in Buenos Aires, the home of both clubs, but in Madrid, Spain. The reason? Violence and chaos erupted outside Boca’s stadium before the first leg, and the match was postponed. The event became known as the “Superclásico de las Américas” or the “Final del Siglo” and was praised for its intensity, drama, and quality. But it also generated a wave of memes, jokes, and parodies that flooded social media, especially from River fans.

The Birth of a Meme

The first meme that emerged after the incident was a photoshopped image of a Boca fan holding a sign that read “La Copa Libertadores se gana en la calle” (The Copa Libertadores is won in the streets). The picture was taken before the first leg, and the fan was referring to the tradition of Boca fans of intimidating and harassing visiting teams and fans outside the stadium. However, after the violence erupted and the match was suspended, River fans turned the sign into a joke, adding captions like “La Copa se gana en el Bernabéu” (The Copa is won in the Bernabéu, the stadium of Real Madrid), “La Copa se gana en el TAS” (The Copa is won in the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which later decided to award the title to River), or “La Copa se gana en el Photoshop” (The Copa is won in Photoshop, referring to the manipulation of the image).

The meme went viral, and soon other versions appeared, featuring different characters, slogans, and situations related to the event. Some mocked Boca’s players, such as Carlos Tevez, who missed a crucial penalty in the second leg, or Fernando Gago, who got injured in the warm-up. Others praised River’s heroes, such as Juan Fernando Quintero, who scored a beautiful goal in the final, or Marcelo Gallardo, the coach who led River to the title despite being suspended from the bench.

The Impact of the Meme

The memes not only entertained and amused football fans around the world but also reflected the social and cultural context of Argentina and Latin America. The rivalry between River and Boca is not only a sporting one but also a socio-economic and political one, rooted in the history of Buenos Aires and the class struggle. River is considered the team of the upper class, the intellectuals, and the foreigners, while Boca is the team of the working class, the immigrants, and the locals. The stereotypes and prejudices associated with each club and their fans are often reinforced or challenged by the media, the politicians, and the celebrities. However, the memes subverted and sublimated these tensions, creating a space of humor and creativity that transcended the boundaries of the traditional discourse.

Some people criticized the memes as disrespectful, tasteless, or violent. They argued that the humor was based on the suffering and humiliation of the Boca fans, who had to witness their team losing the final and being mocked on the internet. They also claimed that the memes encouraged the polarization and the intolerance that already existed in Argentine society, exacerbating the divisions between the rich and the poor, the north and the south, and the peronists and the anti-peronists. However, others defended the memes as harmless, harmless, or even therapeutic. They argued that the humor was a way of coping with the stress and anxiety caused by the violence and the uncertainty of the situation. They also claimed that the memes helped to reduce the tension and the hostility between the fans, by providing a common ground of humor and irony.

The Legacy of the Meme

The memes against Boca Libertadores became an iconic example of the power of humor and internet culture in the world of football. They demonstrated how a simple image or a catchy phrase could capture the essence of a complex event and generate a collective response that transcended the borders of language, geography, and ideology. They also challenged the conventional notions of what is acceptable or appropriate in the realm of football, by blurring the lines between the serious and the absurd, the real and the virtual, the local and the global. Finally, they inspired new generations of fans, artists, and activists to use humor as a weapon of resistance, of critique, and of solidarity, in the face of the challenges and the opportunities of the future.

Responses

“I think the memes were hilarious and creative. They captured the spirit of the moment and the emotions of the fans. They also showed that football is not only about winning or losing, but also about having fun and enjoying the game. I don’t think they were offensive or disrespectful, as long as they didn’t cross the line of racism or sexism.” – Juan, 28, River fan.

“I don’t like the memes at all. They are a sign of the decadence and the vulgarity of our society. They promote violence and hatred, and they insult the dignity of the fans. They are a manifestation of the worst aspects of the internet, where people hide behind anonymity and impunity to spread their toxic messages.” – Miguel, 52, Boca fan.

“I think the memes were a way of expressing our identity and our belonging. They allowed us to laugh at ourselves and at our rivals, without hurting anyone. They also showed that we are more than just football fans, that we are creative and intelligent people who can use humor to analyze and criticize reality.” – Ana, 20, River fan.

“I don’t care about the memes. I think they are a distraction from the real issues of football, such as corruption, violence, and inequality. They are a way of avoiding the real problems and focusing on the superficial aspects of the game. We need to be more serious and responsible, as fans and as citizens.” – Diego, 35, Boca fan.

In recent years, the internet has become a powerful tool for political expression and engagement. Social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have allowed people from all corners of the world to share their opinions, thoughts, and ideas about politics and social issues. One of the most interesting phenomena that have emerged from this digital landscape is the rise of political memes. These humorous and often satirical images and videos have become a popular way to express political criticism and commentary in a way that is both entertaining and accessible.

In Venezuela, political memes have played a significant role in the opposition movement against President Nicolas Maduro and his government. One of the most prominent examples of this is the “Memes Contra Petro” movement, which started in 2018 as a response to the government’s attempt to launch a new cryptocurrency called Petro.

The Birth of Petro

In December 2017, President Maduro announced that Venezuela would be launching its own cryptocurrency called Petro. The government claimed that Petro would be backed by the country’s oil reserves and would be a way to bypass US economic sanctions and strengthen the country’s economy.

However, the announcement was met with skepticism and criticism from many Venezuelans, who saw it as a desperate attempt by the government to raise funds amidst the country’s economic crisis. The opposition argued that Petro was a scam and a way for the government to further control and manipulate the country’s finances. This is where the “Memes Contra Petro” movement comes in.

The Power of Political Memes

Memes are a unique form of political expression because they can convey complex ideas and opinions in a simple and accessible way. They are often humorous and satirical, which makes them more engaging and shareable than traditional political commentary. In the case of “Memes Contra Petro,” the movement used memes to criticize and mock the government’s attempt to launch a new cryptocurrency.

The memes ranged from simple images with captions to more elaborate videos and animations. They often featured caricatures of President Maduro and other government officials, as well as references to popular culture and internet memes. Some of the most popular memes included images of Petro coins with the face of the president on them, as well as videos that parodied the government’s propaganda about the cryptocurrency.

The Impact of Memes Contra Petro

The “Memes Contra Petro” movement quickly gained momentum on social media, with thousands of Venezuelans sharing and creating their own memes to criticize the government. The movement was not just a way to express political dissent, but also a way to build solidarity and a sense of community among opposition supporters.

Some of the most notable examples of the impact of the movement include the cancellation of a Petro launch event in February 2018, which was reportedly due to the backlash from opposition supporters on social media. Additionally, the movement helped to raise awareness about the risks and dangers of investing in Petro, which many Venezuelans saw as a way for the government to further exploit the country’s resources and finances.

The Future of Political Memes

The success of “Memes Contra Petro” has shown the power of political memes as a way to engage and mobilize people around political issues. In an age where social media dominates our lives, memes have become a valuable tool for political expression and activism. However, there are also concerns about the potential for memes to spread misinformation and propaganda, and the need to ensure that they are used responsibly and ethically.

As political polarization and social divisions continue to grow around the world, memes are likely to become an even more important form of political expression and engagement. Whether they are used to criticize governments, promote social justice, or simply entertain and amuse, memes have proven to be a powerful force in shaping the political discourse of our time.

Response and Comments from People

“I think memes are a great way to express political opinions and engage people in political issues. They are often more accessible and entertaining than traditional forms of political commentary, which makes them more effective at reaching a wider audience.” – Maria, 28

“While I think memes can be a powerful tool for political expression, I also worry about their potential to spread misinformation and propaganda. We need to be careful about the sources of our information and ensure that we are not contributing to the spread of fake news.” – Ana, 42

“I think the success of ‘Memes Contra Petro’ shows the power of the internet and social media in shaping political discourse. It’s amazing how a simple image or video can have such a big impact on public opinion and government policy.” – Luis, 30

Memes have become an integral part of our digital culture, and Argentina is no exception. Since the rise of Mauricio Macri and his party “Cambiemos” (Let’s Change) in 2015, a new trend of political memes has emerged, known as “Memes contra Macristas” (Memes against Macri supporters). In this article, we will explore the evolution of this phenomenon and its impact on the political landscape in Argentina.

The Origins of Memes Contra Macristas

The first Memes contra Macristas began to appear on social media during the 2015 presidential campaign. Macri, a businessman and former mayor of Buenos Aires, was running against the incumbent president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner. His campaign slogan was “Cambiemos,” which means “let’s change.” The slogan was heavily criticized for being vague and lacking substance. As the campaign progressed, Macri’s opponents began to create memes that mocked his campaign promises and his perceived lack of experience in politics. These memes were widely shared on social media, and they helped to create a sense of community among those who were critical of Macri’s candidacy.

The Rise of Political Satire

After Macri won the election, Memes contra Macristas continued to grow in popularity. As the new government implemented controversial policies, such as the removal of subsidies for public transportation and the devaluation of the peso, people began to use memes as a way to express their frustration and anger. Political satire has a long history in Argentina, dating back to the 19th century. But with the advent of social media, it has become more accessible and widespread. Memes, in particular, have become a popular form of political satire because they are easy to create and share.

The Impact of Memes Contra Macristas

Memes contra Macristas have had a significant impact on the political discourse in Argentina. They have helped to mobilize opposition to Macri’s government and to create a sense of solidarity among those who are critical of his policies. However, memes can also be divisive. They often rely on stereotypes and oversimplifications, which can reinforce existing biases and prejudices. Moreover, they can be used to spread false information or to attack individuals rather than ideas.

The Future of Memes Contra Macristas

As Argentina heads into another presidential election in 2019, it is unclear what role Memes contra Macristas will play. The current government has been heavily criticized for its handling of the economy and its failure to address social issues. However, the opposition is fragmented and lacks a clear leader. One thing is certain: memes will continue to be a part of the political landscape in Argentina. Whether they will be used to promote unity or to fuel division remains to be seen.

But we need to remember that they are not a substitute for real action. We need to vote and get involved if we want to see change.” – Sofia, 22 In conclusion, Memes contra Macristas have become an important part of the political culture in Argentina. They have helped to mobilize opposition to the current government and to create a sense of community among those who are critical of its policies. However, memes can also be divisive and should be used with caution. As Argentina heads into another election, it will be interesting to see how this trend evolves and what impact it will have on the outcome.

Since the rise of social media, memes have become a popular form of political satire. In Argentina, one of the most popular targets of these memes is former President Mauricio Macri. Known for his neoliberal policies and controversial decisions, Macri was a polarizing figure in Argentine politics. This article will explore the phenomenon of “Memes Contra Macri” and its impact on the country’s political landscape.

The Origins of Memes Contra Macri

The first Memes Contra Macri emerged in 2015, during the presidential campaign. Macri was running against Daniel Scioli, the candidate of the incumbent party. The memes were a response to Macri’s campaign promises, particularly his pledge to “change” the country. Many Argentines were skeptical of Macri’s promises, given his background as a wealthy businessman and his affiliation with the conservative party.

Memes Contra Macri quickly became a way for Argentines to express their frustration with the new president. The memes ranged from humorous to scathing, and they often criticized Macri’s policies or his personal life. Some memes focused on his perceived lack of empathy or his tendency to blame others for his mistakes. Others poked fun at his English language skills or his family’s wealth.

The Impact of Memes Contra Macri

The impact of Memes Contra Macri on Argentine politics is difficult to measure. Some argue that the memes helped to mobilize opposition to Macri’s policies, particularly among younger voters. Others claim that the memes were simply a way for people to blow off steam, without having any real effect on policy.

Regardless of their impact, the memes were a reflection of the public’s dissatisfaction with Macri’s presidency. They also highlighted the power of social media as a tool for political expression. In a country where traditional media is often biased or censored, social media provided a platform for voices that might otherwise have been silenced.

The Legacy of Memes Contra Macri

As of 2023, Macri has been out of office for several years. However, Memes Contra Macri continue to circulate on social media. Some argue that the memes have lost their relevance, now that Macri is no longer in power. Others claim that the memes are still a way for Argentines to express their dissatisfaction with the current government.

Regardless of their current impact, Memes Contra Macri are an important part of Argentina’s political history. They represent a new form of political expression, one that is accessible to anyone with access to the internet. They also serve as a reminder of the power of humor and satire in times of political turmoil.

Juan, a political science student

“I think Memes Contra Macri were a really important way for young people to get involved in politics. They showed that you didn’t have to be a member of a political party to have a voice. They also helped to break down some of the fear and intimidation that can come with criticizing the government.”

María, a teacher

“I think Memes Contra Macri were sometimes funny, but they could also be really mean-spirited. I don’t think it’s productive to attack someone’s personal life or appearance, even if you disagree with their politics. We should focus on discussing the issues, not making fun of people.”

Roberto, an artist
