The Rise of the Class of 2022 Memes
The trend of creating memes specifically for graduating classes has been around for quite some time now, but it has become increasingly popular in recent years. Social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok have all become breeding grounds for these celebratory memes, with graduating seniors sharing them amongst their peers and even competing to see who can create the funniest ones.
But what sets the Class of 2022 memes apart from its predecessors is the unique challenges that this particular class has faced. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted their final years of high school and college, forcing many to miss out on traditional experiences like prom, graduation ceremonies, and even in-person classes. As a result, the Class of 2022 memes have taken on a more bittersweet tone, serving as both a humorous and poignant reminder of what they have been through.
The Best Class of 2022 Memes
From jokes about virtual learning to references to popular culture, the Class of 2022 memes have run the gamut of comedic material. Here are some of the best ones that have emerged so far:
“I Survived High School During a Pandemic”
This meme features a photo of a student in a graduation cap and gown, with the caption “I survived high school during a pandemic” emblazoned across the top. It’s a simple yet powerful way for students to acknowledge the challenges they’ve faced and the resilience they’ve shown in the face of adversity.
“We’re the Zoomers”
This meme plays off the fact that many students had to attend virtual classes via Zoom due to the pandemic. It features a photo of the character SpongeBob SquarePants with the caption “We’re the Zoomers now” – a pun on the term “Baby Boomers” that refers to the generation born after World War II.
“Graduation 2022: The Sequel”
With many schools postponing or canceling graduation ceremonies due to the pandemic, some students have joked that their graduation will be a sequel to the previous year’s ceremony. This meme features a photo of two students in graduation gowns, with the caption “Graduation 2022: The Sequel” written above their heads.
The Response to Class of 2022 Memes
As with any meme trend, the response to the Class of 2022 memes has been mixed. Some have praised them for their ability to bring levity to a difficult situation, while others have criticized them for being insensitive or trivializing the hardships that students have faced.
One Twitter user wrote, “The Class of 2022 memes are hilarious and relatable. It’s good to be able to laugh at ourselves and the crazy year we’ve had.” Another user disagreed, saying, “I don’t think it’s appropriate to make jokes about something that has caused so much pain and suffering for so many people.”
