It’s that time of the year again where two of America’s most celebrated events collide – Cinco de Mayo and Kentucky Derby. While both occasions have different cultural and historical backgrounds, people have found a way to merge them into a hilarious meme that has been circulating on the internet.

What is Cinco de Mayo?

Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday celebrated on May 5th every year. It commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. While it is a significant date in Mexican history, it is not Mexico’s Independence Day, which is celebrated on September 16th.

What is Kentucky Derby?

Kentucky Derby is a famous horse race that takes place annually on the first Saturday of May. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious horse races in the United States, with a rich tradition that dates back to 1875. It is known as the “most exciting two minutes in sports” and is attended by thousands of people from all over the world.

The Cinco de Mayo and Kentucky Derby Meme

The Cinco de Mayo and Kentucky Derby meme is a mashup of the two events, where people combine the cultural elements of both celebrations to create hilarious and relatable content. For example, one meme shows a horse wearing a sombrero and a poncho, while another shows a jockey holding a margarita instead of a whip.

The meme has become incredibly popular on social media, with thousands of people sharing their own versions of the meme. Many people find the combination of the two events amusing, and it has become a fun way to celebrate both occasions.

In 2016, then-presidential candidate Donald Trump sent out a tweet on Cinco de Mayo that sparked controversy and backlash. The tweet featured a photo of Trump eating a taco bowl with the caption, “Happy Cinco de Mayo! The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics!” Many saw the tweet as insensitive and culturally appropriative, and it quickly became a meme.

The Memes

The Cinco de Mayo meme featuring Trump and his taco bowl quickly spread across social media, with users adding their own captions and commentary. Some were humorous, while others were critical of Trump’s lack of understanding of Mexican culture and the holiday itself.

One popular meme featured the taco bowl with the words “I’m sorry for invading your country and killing your people, have a taco bowl.” Another showed a group of people in traditional Mexican dress holding signs that read “We don’t all eat taco bowls.” The memes were a way for people to express their frustrations with Trump’s rhetoric and actions towards the Latinx community.

The Backlash

Trump’s Cinco de Mayo tweet was met with immediate backlash and criticism. Many saw it as a shallow attempt to pander to Hispanic voters, while others took issue with the fact that he was eating a taco bowl instead of acknowledging the holiday’s historical significance.

Some prominent Latinx figures spoke out against the tweet, including actress Salma Hayek, who posted a photo of herself holding a sign that read “I am Mexican and I am not a taco bowl, I am a human being.” The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda also released a statement condemning the tweet, calling it “an insult to the millions of Mexicans and Mexican Americans who have made great contributions to our country.”

The Response

Despite the backlash, Trump continued to defend his tweet and even used it as a way to attack his opponents. During a rally in New Mexico, he held up a taco bowl and said, “I love Hispanics. And by the way, they’re gonna vote for me, big league.”

While some may have found Trump’s tweet and subsequent comments humorous, others saw them as indicative of a larger issue of cultural insensitivity and lack of understanding towards marginalized communities.

Reflections

As we look back on the Cinco de Mayo meme featuring Trump, it’s important to remember that it was more than just a funny image to be shared on social media. It was a representation of the cultural appropriation and tone-deafness that has been present throughout Trump’s presidency.

It’s also a reminder of the power of memes and social media in shaping public discourse and holding those in power accountable. While Trump may have continued to defend his tweet, the widespread backlash and criticism sent a message that his words and actions would not go unchecked.

Comments from People

“I didn’t find the tweet or the meme funny at all. It was just another example of Trump’s lack of understanding and respect for other cultures. I hope that as a society, we can do better at recognizing and calling out cultural appropriation and insensitivity when we see it.”

Conclusion

The Cinco de Mayo meme featuring Trump may have been a fleeting moment in the grand scheme of things, but it was a powerful reminder of the importance of cultural sensitivity and awareness.
